Proceedings:

The meeting commenced with 2 presentations from Tom Bishop and Jean Hammond which introduced the concepts behind the project, as laid out in the Call to Action circulated prior to the meeting.

Presentation 1 - Tom Bishop, VIEO, Inc

Presentation 2 - Jean Hammond, JPH Associates

The presentations were followed by considerable discussion among the participants, both those present in person and those who dialed in to the teleconference. This included an exploration about the need for another initiative. After some discussion there was a general acceptance that the QoS focus of the AQRM project was a significant addition to existing standards-related efforts. An important aspect of the project is that it will build on existing standards wherever possible, and it is in no way intended to duplicate any existing efforts.

In afternoon, when the teleconference was over, discussion moved on to consider the charter for the project, and the next steps needed to take it forward.

The revised charter is contained in the latest version of the Call to Action. It reads:

To develop:

  • a set of architecture principles,
  • profiles of standards, and
  • appropriate standards for an adaptive approach to measuring and controlling the Quality of Experience and the Quality of Service of existing and new applications across one or more real-time* enterprises.

The objectives of the group will include:

  • Recognition/acceptance/endorsement of an adaptive approach to managing distributed applications.
  • Industry ratification of architecture principles and profiles of standards for the above objective.
  • Identification of standards gaps and an action plan to close gaps.
  • Ensure management interoperability, across management domains, and plug-and-play integration, within resource domains.

*responsive to business objectives, etc (incomplete editor’s note - write this)

The followup teleconference for the group will be on Monday May 5th at 1200PDT, 1500EDT. Participants were asked to consider the following issues ahead of that call:

  • The revised charter
  • Their company's participation in the AQRM project
  • Participation in the Steering Committee
  • Possible workgroup structure for the project

A program of further teleconferences is planned for June 2nd, 16th, and 30th, and July 14th. This will be followed by the next face-to-face meeting at The Open Group conference in Boston during the week of July 21st. This will be a 1 or 2 day meeting commencing on Wednesday July 23rd.

Initial activities planned for the group are an inventory of existing standards and related activities which can be used by the project, and consideration of whether it would be useful to try and encourage the creation of some form of reference implementation.
