The Application Quality / Resource Management (AQRM) project (pronounced "Aquarium") was one of the results of the merger in 2003 between the Quality of Service task force and the Enterprise Management forum within The Open Group. The purpose of this document is to record the important achievements of the project so far to provide background and direction.
The AQRM project started with a Call to Action setting a broad vision of the task to be undertaken. Once the project started, this was refined into the AQRM Vision Statement. In the intervening period, progress has been made towards a more detailed definition of the project.
One of the most important output of the project so far is the AQoS Management Functional Description. This sets out the basic requirements for the project. A Summary of the Functional Description is available and the full document can be found here.
One of the fundamental decisions made by the project is to use the DMTF CIM/WBEM specifications for modeling systems and resources. CIM/WBEM is a universally available technology on a wide variety of platforms and is the fundamental underpinning of many other projects such as The Open Group's OpenPegasus open source implementation and the Storage Networking Industry Association's SMI-S specifications. A useful presentation on the AQRM project, relating it to the CIM/WBEM, was given at the DMTF EMWUSA conference in 2004
The AQRM project is currently focusing its efforts onto a subset of the total problem. The intent is to address the wider project goals by concentrating on a series of tactical steps. By addressing a number of smaller projects, it is intended to address immediate and achievable components of the overall project which together will start to build towards the broader goal.
