Return to Conference Week Outline Agenda

Open Source in the Enterprise
Tuesday 4th February 2003

An opportunity exists for The Open Group to create value in the domain of Open Source in the Enterprise. A proposal originating at The Open Group Members' Conference in Cannes in October, 2002 has gathered significant momentum. This meeting will present progress to date and serve both to motivate and attract contributors, and to keep The Open Group's activity focused on its areas of strength.

A number of areas for contribution in the space of Open Source and the Enterprise have appeared in discussions so far, including the following, which are of particular relevance to the Architecture Forum:

  • How to deploy Open Source in the Enterprise. (Methods for selecting open source technologies, engaging with communities, managing the deployment over time.)
  • How to make Open Source fit for Enterprise Architecture. (Sharing of business-driven requirements, relating Open Source and Building Blocks, the role of APIs, the value of certification, open source policy.)
  • Sharing information about Open Source usage in the Enterprise. (Case studies, co-operations, how to survive politics)
  • How to combine Open Source technologies and products to platforms. (Elevating the definition of "platform" from UNIX to a richer level, populating the Building Block Information Base with Open Source, version compatibility, interoperability)
