Austin Group Minutes of the 10 June Teleconference Austin-214 Page 1 of 1 Submitted by Andrew Josey, The Open Group. June 11, 2004 Attendees Andrew Josey, The Open Group Don Cragun , Sun, PASC OR Nick Stoughton, USENIX, WG15 OR Mark Brown, IBM, TOG OR Apologies Dave Butenhof, HP Joanna Farley, Sun Ulrich Drepper, Red Hat Draft Status --------------- No new status to report. The hardcopy run was received from the printers and dispatched. Only one copy is left remaining. http://www.opengroup.org/bookstore/catalog/t041y.htm Defect Report Processing ------------------------- The group picked up on the latest batch of defect reports, which are available at the following URL: http://www.opengroup.org/austin/aardvark/latest/ XBD ERN 7 , BRE nested subpatterns (XBD BRE defn vs regcomp()) OPEN Glenn Fowler took an action from the last meeting and circulated a proposal to the discussion list on Jun 3. Action on all to review that proposal for the next meeting. Leave open for now. AI-026 A new interpretation had been proposed relating to option constants in unistd.h. Concern about replication of text/requirements. Action: Andrew to respond to Geoff's proposal, with consideration for which section (unistd.h or 2.1.6) should have most of the text. XRAT ERN 1 rationale for cancellation points out of sync with normative text Accept (XSH - note some of the defect report numbers were off by one, the set below has the corrected numbers) XSH ERN 36 editorial error unsigned sigval -> union sigval Accept It was agreed that this is an editorial error. XSH ERN 37 mq_notify behavior when process not registered Accept as marked below This is presently an unaddressed issue in the specification, If the process is not currently registered it is unspecified whether nothing is done or the call fails. This issue should be sent down the interpretations track. No conformance distinction can be for this version of the specification. The working group should consider in a future revision adding EINVAL error as a may fail case to allow implementations to detect this if they wish. XSH ERN 38 mq_notify description should also refer to mq_timedreceive() Accept XSH ERN 39 deadlock detection for pthread_mutex_getprioceiling() OPEN The standard does not address the issue, and so if the calling thread does not have the mutex locked the results are unspecified. In a future revision we could require that the mutex locked or something else... leave open for another week to get thread expert input. XSH ERN 40 mem_align() alignment Accept XCU ERN 18 mailx and LC_TIME Accept as marked below This issue should be forwarded down the interpretations track a a proposed defect in the standard. The proposed change for a future revision is to revert to wording based on the 1992 standard: LC_TIME This variable may determine the format and contents of the date and time strings written by mailx. This volume of IEEE Std 1003.1-2001 specifies the effects of this variable only for systems supporting the User Portability Utilities Option. XCU ERN 19 pax and UTF-8 handling Accept as Marked below The current wording in the aardvark was modified as suggested by Paul Eggert, rewording the rationale section as follows: Change from: Archives using the pax extended header hdrcharset keyword are not portable and are only expected to be used to save files from a system and restore files to the same system. Users are not encouraged to use hdrcharset directly; it is primarily intended to support the -o invalid=binary option. to: Translating file names and other attributes from a locale's encoding to UTF-8 and then back again can lose information, as the resulting file name might not be byte-for-byte equivalent to the original. To avoid this problem, users can specify the -o hdrcharset=binary option, which will cause the resulting archive to use binary format for all names and attributes. Such archives are not portable among hosts that use different native encodings (e.g., EBCDIC- versus ASCII-based encodings), but they will allow interchange among the vast majority of POSIX file systems in practical use. Also, the -o hdrcharset=binary option will cause pax in copy mode to behave more like other standard utilities like cp. (the rdvk report should be consulted for the full change) Next Steps ----------- Andrew will update the aardvark reports with the latest inbound defect reports. Andrew will generate some new interpretations. There are a number of open action items outstanding: 1. Don Cragun Pathname Resolution proposal 2. Larry Dwyer system() and threads 3. Joerg Schilling wording for XCU ERN 1 pax The next teleconference call is scheduled for June 24 2004
