Minutes of the 3 June 2010 Teleconference Austin-484 Page 1 of 1 Submitted by Andrew Josey, The Open Group. June 4 , 2010 Attendees Andrew Josey, The Open Group Don Cragun, PASC OR Mark Brown, IBM, TOG OR Geoff Clare, The Open Group Nick Stoughton, USENIX, ISO/IEC OR Eric Blake, Red Hat Apologies Ulrich Drepper, Red Hat Andrew reported that after last weeks meeting he had finalized the most recent batch of interpretations. We are leaving bugs 247 and 249 open for now as part of the strange filename handling issue. * New business We returned to the open bugs: 0253: Scripts need to have a way to determine that "cd -P" correctly set the PWD environment variable. Accept as marked http://austingroupbugs.net/view.php?id=253 Don had proposed an action in the original bug and amended it to reflect discussions on the reflector. We also discussed Dave Korn's suggestion ( See email seq 13900 on May 10) however we identified a problem, in that when PWD can't be set by cd -P it might be left as a pathname for the current directory that contains symlinks, in which case the -ef test would give a "false pass". It was decided to go with the action proposed by Don. This was classified as resolved, future enhancement. 0254: awk -f - Accept http://austingroupbugs.net/view.php?id=254 This should be sent down the interpretations track. Interpretation response: The standard states that implementations must not use standard input when a progfile option argument of "-" is given, and conforming implementations must conform to this. However, concerns have been raised about this which are being referred to the sponsor. Rationale: This is not historic practice. Notes to the Editor (not part of this interpretation): Make the changes suggested by the submitter in the Desired Action field. 0255 shell expansions in assignments that precede a command name Accept http://austingroupbugs.net/view.php?id=255 This should be sent down the interpretations track. Interpretation response: The standard is unclear on this issue, and no conformance distinction can be made between alternative implementations based on this. This is being referred to the sponsor. Rationale: None. Notes to the Editor (not part of this interpretation): See the Desired Action 0256: fpathconf unclear on effect of mount points Accept as marked http://austingroupbugs.net/view.php?id=256 This should be sent down the interpretations track. Interpretation response: The standard is unclear on this issue, and no conformance distinction can be made between alternative implementations based on this. This is being referred to the sponsor. Rationale: None. Notes to the Editor (not part of this interpretation): At line 29481 change "3,4" to "4,7". At line 29510, change: 5. If path or fildes refers to a directory, the value returned shall be the maximum length of a relative pathname when the specified directory is the working directory. to: 5. If path or fildes refers to a directory, the value returned shall be the maximum length of a relative pathname that would not cross any mount points when the specified directory is the working directory. 0257: make should not use the shell -e option when errors are ignored Accept http://austingroupbugs.net/view.php?id=257 This should be sent down the interpretations track. Interpretation response: The standard states commands run by make always use the shell -e option, and conforming implementations must conform to this. However, concerns have been raised about this which are being referred to the sponsor. Rationale: This does not match historic practice. Notes to the Editor (not part of this interpretation): Make the changes suggested in the Desired Action . 0258 strftime needs an %EB specifier OPEN We accept the idea that nothing needs to be done, but the specification is incomplete, we need to make additions to the locale, and other changes. Action : Mark to develop a set of recommended actions for review at the next meeting. * Old business We then returned to the discussion on handling large filenames. The discussion ranged from pros and cons of adding the tw utility, adding environment variables, what to do for the system calls? It was noted that its a large topic and a written proposal is needed. Next Steps ---------- The next call will be on June 17 at 16:00 UK time/08:00 Pacific and will continue on aardvark processing, and then if time allows some further discussion on the topic of unusual (non-portable) filenames. http://austingroupbugs.net See the calendar for the list of dialup numbers.
