Does not need any change, the one suggested would have
undesirable side effects.
The intent that if a pathname is substituted to the null path that entry
is to be skipped, the effect on later entries that might
be files under that directory should not be affected by
a parent being subtituted to the null path string.
There is also a correlation between this and the -d option.
