Interoperability

Access to Information

Today, information is the fuel that runs the global economy.  But to access this stored information, modern systems have to be able to interoperate .. with those around them. More

Sharing of Information

Information for design, manufacture, sales, distribution, and accounting should no longer be held in a compartmentalized manner; in today's business environment the information has to be shared quickly and accurately across the organization.  A key enabler for sharing of information is the joining together of the information technology systems and processes. Distributed Processing and Supply Chain Management

Today, many companies are more dependent on outside suppliers and partners than ever before .. and are, in many cases, linked to their systems.  But getting the whole system to run smoothly requires a tremendous amount of communication and coordination.  And that can be next to impossible without Open Standards and Interoperability.  More

Partnerships between the people who make new technologies and those who use them are essential for learning the best way to move 'state-or-the-art' to the next level.  But we no longer have the luxury of carefully choosing partners from within our own industry circle.  Today, partners com from non-traditional - even unexpected - quarters.  In some sectors, such as web applications, even competitors have to cooperate.  But partnerships can only be forged in an atmosphere of impartiality and trust.  The Open Group has a number of Forums that provide this ingredient.

Every organization that sells or uses information-system products should be a member.  Typically, a company come to The Open Group because it's in their own interest - they want information, influence and involvement - especially when they're planning a venture into a new area that's beyond their experience of expertise.

The Needs and Priorities of IT Customers

The Customer Council is focusing on customer requirements looking to feed these to the Forums as appropriate.  The Supplier and Customer Councils work closely together.

Customer Requirements

At the last three Open Group Member Meetings (in Austin USA, Washington DC USA, and San Jose USA) The Open Group Customer Council looked at a number of requirements including those presented by the US Department of Defense - Defense Information Systems Agency (DISA). Representatives of the Customer Council for each specialist Forum/Program/Group have the role of presenting these requirements to their specialist Group and reporting back. The Council is in the process of collecting and organizing requirements to form a database which can be used to track progress.  Any customer member is invited to offer a brief presentation of their company's requirements.
