The project is running for a period of two years - from January
2000 until February 2002.
Project Main Goals(s)
The CORVAL2 project’s overall purpose is to enable and accelerate the IT market
transition from a world of single-vendor IT, through the current “open systems” phase to a more effective model
of multi-vendor distributed and concurrent computing, encompassing middle-ware
for interoperability.
Specifically, CORVAL2's main objective is to investigate new mechanisms
and tools for validating the implementation of Object Oriented technology, particularly the new Server and, resources
permitting, Component Technology currently being specified by the members of OMG for the Common Object Request
Broker Architecture
Key Issues
The main issues related to the implementation of the CORVAL2 project
are to provide much needed verification of conformance for an integral piece of the key Action 4 infrastructure
of the Information Society. All too often Developers and Innovators are delayed in the development of new initiatives
because the technology upon which they depend does not perform in the manner claimed.
CORBA Specifications and standards are all about working on Heterogeneous
systems. Due to the nature of the implementation of these systems it is important that the mechanisms to verify
the implementation of new levels of technology continue to develop in parallel with the technology itself. This
project hopes to address this improvement in technology.
Technical Approach
The two main partners in CORVAL2 - The Open Group and GMD Fokus
will work together to develop new technology that will combine the previous initiatives of the two companies into
a comprehensive set of tools and tests for testing and verifying CORBA implementations. This includes utilisation
and enhancement of ADL, TET, and TTCN for test definition, test management and protocol testing.
Expected Achievements/Impact
The expected
results will be a set of dependable, product quality CORBA
validation tools, associated test suites and a Certification scheme, leading to:
White Paper
The partners of the project have published a White Paper to give details of the
project, and its goals. The latest White Paper was updated in January 2002.

Brand Program for VSORB2.3
In October 2001, The Open Brand for CORBA 2.3 was launched, making
Branding Available for VSORB 2.3. At present, the Test Suite and the Branding Program apply to C++ CORBA ORBs.
Java CORBA ORB functionality will be added within 60 days. More information on the Branding Program is available
here. Please go to the Press
Releases for more information on the project and the Branding Program
in general.
For any additional information about the Open Brand for CORBA Program, and details
on how to get involved, please contact The Open Group's Sales Team.
You may download the Source Code of the Interoperability Showcase
that is being run at OMG Technical Meetings from here. These interoperability demo's are initially being supported
by the work of the members of the CORVAL2 project. Later Interoperability Trials will be independent self funded
events.
The source code of version 2.1.00 of the interoperability test software
is now available from here. A readme file is included in the archive, but it can also be separately
downloaded from here). The Java 2 GUI for the demonstration, which will be used during the trial, can also be downloaded
here).
