Interconnect Software Consorium Socket API Extensions Working Group. -------------------------------------------------------------------- Meeting: Thursday 18th April 2002 20:00GMT (21:00BST, 04:00p EDT, 03:00p CDT, 01:00p PDT, 22:00CEST, 05:00JST+) Toll Free (US & Canada): 1-888-742-8686 International: +1-303-928-2600 Conference ID: 3378790 -------------------------------- Attendees: David Edmondson, Sun Jeremy Harris, Sun Vish Subramanian, HP Jeff Messing, IBM Annie Foong, Intel Bob Tiesberg, Compaq Masanori Itoh, Fujitsu Juliana Hsu, IBM John Kasperski, IBM Satya Sharma, IBM Louis Laborde, HP Jack McCann, Compaq Carl Hensler, Sun -------------------------------- Agenda: 1. Agenda bashing. None. 2. Comments on status report for the Steering Committee (dme). Satya suggested that things that have been discussed and deliberately removed from the scope of the group should be noted. SCTP extensions were brought up as something that should probably be incorporated. dme will act as editor for a fourth requirements section that will cover API expansion not covered by the other three areas. Current this comprises: * SCTP extensions, * sendfile, * explicit RDMA operations. 3. Report from Steering Committee meeting of 2002-04-17 (Satya). Satya used the proposed status report to report at the steering committee meeting. Expanding scope to discuss file IO was discussed. SC was interested, the working group is asked to produce a white paper to describe the issues. - why POSIX async io is not appropriate for network applications, - why a unified network/file IO API would be useful. ACTION Satya: take Vish's issue list and draft something for part 1. ACTION dme: draft something for part 2. Completion notification requirement is shared with Transport API working group. The Transport group is referring to DAT (DAPL) requirements, which indicate that there should be a unified mechanism for all notifications (i.e. not just for the specific API). The SC recommended, and the two working groups agreed, that they should meet sometime soon after May 3rd, when the respective requirements documents should be nearing completion. The SC confirmed dme and Satya as chairs for this working group. 4. Walk through Jeff's Memory Management document (Jeff). See mail thread for details of the conversation that took place during this section. 5. AOB. -------------------------------- Outstanding Actions: 2002-04-18/01 Satya. Draft a paper describing why the existing POSIX async IO API is not suitable for use with sockets. 2002-04-18/02 dme. Draft a paper describing why a unified socket/file IO API would be useful. -------------------------------- Next Meeting: Thursday 25th April 2002 20:00GMT (21:00BST, 04:00p EDT, 03:00p CDT, 01:00p PDT, 22:00CEST, 05:00JST+) Toll Free (US & Canada): 1-888-742-8686 International: +1-303-928-2600 Conference ID: 3378790 -------------------------------- Contact Details: email: icsc-socketwg@opengroup.org web: http://www.opengroup.org/icsc/member/sockets/
