An Introduction to Internet of Things (IoT) and Lifecycle Management – Executive Summary

The Internet of Things (IoT) is expected to have an impact on business and the world at large in a way similar to the Internet itself. This White Paper introduces the vision of The Open Group IoT Work Group, explains its scope and definition of IoT, its emergence, and how its development and acceptance will be assured under the auspices of The Open Group.

The work of the IoT Work Group is of interest to business leaders, system planners, architects, and technology providers seeking to manage dispersed lifecycle information from disparate physical and technology objects that transcend enterprise boundaries.

As you can see from the logo and description above, The Open Group vision is Boundaryless Information Flow™, achieved through global interoperability in a secure, reliable, and timely manner. The IoT will extend Boundaryless Information Flow, not only to the trillions of autonomous objects that make up the ever-increasing IoT, but also by seamlessly integrating them in an open yet trustworthy manner that enables the creation of true Systems of Systems. The Open Group IoT standards Open Messaging Interface (O-MI) and Open Data Format (O-DF), developed by the IoT Work Group and published by The Open Group in October 2014, are major enablers for such Systems of Systems, and form a critical part of the overall architecture for IoT. The Work Group intends to continue developing standards and guidance within the scope of the objectives described in this paper, enabling the development of IoT through its many contributors and building blocks to be architected in a consistent manner.
