Sad News From The Open Group and the AEA

It is with deep sadness that we inform you of the passing earlier this week of two of our esteemed colleagues, John Spencer and Len Fehskens.

John died peacefully on Monday, August 28 after a long battle with cancer, which he fought bravely and quietly for many years. John worked for The Open Group in various roles for the last 28 years, most recently being responsible for plenary, track, and regional meeting speakers as part of the Events Team. However, his longest and best-remembered role was as the first Forum Director for The Open Group Architecture Forum. During this period, John led the Forum to the very first version of the TOGAF® standard, and every version thereafter up to Version 8.1.1.

Without John’s quiet but determined professionalism, the TOGAF standard would not be what it is today and, therefore, nor would The Open Group.

Len passed away at home on Tuesday, August 29 with his family following a brief hospital stay. He worked for The Open Group as VP of Skills and Capabilities and at The Association of Enterprise Architecture (AEA) as Chief Editor of the Journal of Enterprise Architecture. September would have been his 10 year anniversary at the organizations.

Len had an incredible drive to improve the quality of the work we call Enterprise Architecture and to lift it to the status of a profession. During his tenure at The Open Group, Len helped shape the Open CA certification, which leads the way in EA certification globally. As Editor of the Journal of Enterprise Architecture (JEA), he elevated it to its pre-eminent status in the industry. Len was highly respected by everyone who was in the business of Enterprise Architecture and for very good reason. His passing is a loss to Enterprise Architecture in general, and to the continued evolution of it as a profession in particular.

Please join us in remembering John and Len – dear colleagues and friends who will be sorely missed by all who knew them.
