The Open Group announces availability of a new family of test suites in support of UNIX 98, the mark for systems conforming to the Single UNIX® Specification, Version 2.

Test coverage includes the first industry standard tests for 64-bit systems, Large File Support, POSIX Threads, POSIX Realtime, X/Open Threads, ISO C Amendment 1 and Dynamic Linking.

The combination of VSC, VSTH, VSRT and VSX4 provide the first complete POSIX Conformance Test Suite family in the industry for the whole of ISO/IEC 9945-1:1996 (POSIX 1003.1-1996) and ISO/IEC 9945-2:1993 (POSIX.2-1992).

Designed for use as an integral part of development organizations quality assurance and regression test cycle, the new family of test suites offer ease of use features which can lead to significant cost savings in problem detection during the development cycle.

Features include:

  • a common harness (VSXgen) for the VSTH,VSRT,VSX5 tests, allowing a common look and feel to the test suites.
  • the ability to run the test suites standalone, as well as to integrate them into a meta test suite.
  • use of the standard Test Environment Toolkit permits flexibility and extensibility of test execution.
  • the inclusion of multiple test modes for different standards.

The new test suites are:

VSTH - The industry standard Threads test suite : a test suite running under the VSXgen harness covering POSIX 1003.1c and the additional X/Open threads (Aspen) requirements.

VSRT - The industry standard POSIX Realtime test suite: a test suite running under the VSXgen harness covering POSIX 1003.1b and POSIX 1003.1i.

VSX5 - a test suite running under the VSXgen harness: includes tests for ISO C Amendment 1, Dynamic Linking and Large File Summit extensions.

VSC5 - A major upgrade of VSC, the industry standard Commands & Utilities test suite: includes Large File Summit extensions, n bit clean, Aspen commands and year 2000 alignment.

VSU5 - A major upgrade of VSU, the industry standard test suite for Sockets, Curses and other UNIX extensions: includes Large File Summit extensions and n bit cleanup for the traditional UNIX extensions; revised Sockets tests for XNS Issue 5; a major upgrade of the Xcurses tests which are revised for X/Open Curses Issue 4 Version 2.

VST5 - A maintenance update of VST, the industry standard XTI test suite: includes data size neutraliity in support of new 64-bit architectures.

A Data Sheet describing the complete Eastwood testing program is available.

A matrix of test suite applicability for the various X/Open branding programmes is available.

Background information

An important part of The Open Group's product range is its test technologies. These represent a cumulative investment approaching $20M. Any developer of open systems products must invest in some level of testing during development and QA to ensure compliance to specifications. The Open Group test suites enables such companies to share the cost of test suite development and maintenance, across the industry , yielding lower testing costs and a higher and more uniform level of conformance between products. In this way, vendors can reduce the costs of development while increasing the quality of the software produced.
