The Open Group Announces General Availability of DCE 1.2.2 with Security and File System Enhancements

New DCE Release for client side offered royalty-free for commercial use

CAMBRIDGE, Massachusetts (December 9, 1996) -The Open Group, a leading organization for the advancement of open systems, today announced general availability of Release 1.2.2 of its Distributed Computing Environment (DCE). The latest release of DCE includes significant enhancements to the widely acclaimed DCE security services, as well as improvements in manageability, fault-tolerance and scalability for the DCE Distributed File System (DFS). Also provided in this release is a preview of a message-queuing service that takes advantage of DCE services.

"DCE is a key technology in three of today's most important areas of computing: security, the World Wide Web, and distributed objects," said Kathryn DeNitto, DCE Business Area Manager. "It is the only suite of integrated services from a vendor-neutral source that enables organizations to develop, use, and maintain distributed applications across heterogeneous networks. To help proliferate DCE services in the rapidly growing Internet market, The Open Group is offering commercial customers the opportunity to license the DCE 1.2.2 client-side software without paying royalties, following schema that have proved successful for many Internet providers."

The DCE 1.2.2 release focuses on enhancements to Security and DFS, and builds on the Release 1.2.1 improvements in ease of programming and administration.

DCE Background

The widely adopted DCE technology is a comprehensive set of services that support the development, use and maintenance of distributed applications. DCE allows heterogeneous systems to work together cooperatively and masks the technical complexities of the network. Because DCE is independent of the operating system and network, it is compatible with many diverse environments currently in place by users.
