Broad Support from ISVs for Tivoli SecureWay® Policy Director
Policy Director's API Accepted as a Technical Standard by The Open Group

SAN JOSE, Calif., Jan. 18, 2000 (RSA Conference) -- Tivoli Systems Inc., and IBM company, today announced top IT industry independent software vendor (ISV) support for Tivoli® SecureWay Policy Director, a leading authorization service for securing IT enterprises. Added proof of the security engine's industry acceptance was the recent approval by The Open Group™, a vendor and technology-neutral consortium dedicated to enterprise integration, of the product's application programming interface (API) as a Technical Standard.

The central control point of Tivoli's SecureWay suite of security management and control products for e-business, Tivoli SecureWay Policy Director enables customers to have fine-grained access control for e-business applications. It provides access control management that centralizes network and application security policy, integrating the policy schemas for a company's security technologies with the software that enforces those policies. This integration helps reduce implementation time and management complexity, thereby lowering the total cost of secure computing.

"Enterprise customers today are faced with managing multiple security components and services from different vendors, each with its own unique approach to defining and enforcing security policy," said Phil Shacter, Director of Network Strategy Services for the Burton Group. "Strong industry support for Tivoli SecureWay Policy Director should enable a more consistent set of security policies, reduce the administration burden of managing policies across products, and result in greater integration between security products."

Advanced Authorization API: Now a Technical Standard

The Tivoli SecureWay Policy Director API, named Advanced Authorization API, is an application-independent security and authorization framework enabling customers to build security and authorization directly into their enterprise infrastructures. In December 1999, after review by The Open Group's Security and eCommerce Program Group -- with comments submitted by program group members including IBM, Hewlett-Packard, Baltimore Technologies, Sun Microsystems, and Entrust Technologies -- the API was approved as a Technical Standard and published in January 2000. The specification is available at The Open Group web site at http://www.opengroup.org.

"The publication of this standard is a significant step forward in meeting the customer's demand for interoperable e-commerce solutions," said Allen Brown, President and CEO of The Open Group. "Customers and suppliers are increasingly participating in the Security Program Group to jointly develop these solutions. The Advanced Authorization API is one such result."

With the Advanced Authorization API, customers can take advantage of features such as security policy inheritance, replication, and intelligent load balancing. This results in reduced costs associated with application development and administration and the ability to leverage existing security infrastructure while migrating to new technologies.
