SAN FRANCISCO , January 20, 2009 – The Open Group, a vendor- and technology-neutral consortium focused on open standards and global interoperability within and between enterprises, today announced the plenary agenda and preliminary speaker lineup for the Enterprise Cloud Computing Summit, to be held on February 3, 2009 at the Marriott Mission Valley in San Diego. The event, part of The Open Group’s 21st Enterprise Architecture Practitioners Conference, will feature original presentations and panel discussions from cloud computing experts at Amazon, HP, Microsoft, Salesforece.com, Cisco, Blue Mountain Labs, Sun Microsystems and IBM. Speakers and attendees will discuss and dissect key topics such as the cloud computing service model, the need for standardization and cloud implementation guidelines and best practices.
A Who’s Who of cloud computing industry experts and analysts will speak in a highly interactive and discussion-friendly agenda. Some of the executive speakers and topics include:
- Russ Daniels, vice president and CTO, Cloud Services Strategy, Hewlett-Packard, will establish a level discussion forum with his “Understanding the Cloud” keynote that explores both the cloud computing paradigm and the need for cross-cloud interoperability and standardization.
- David Linthicum, founder of Blue Mountain Labs, will provide a concise implementation guide with his closing keynote “Where Cloud Computing Meets Enterprise Architecture,” that demonstrates the technology’s use within the context of enterprise architecture and SOA, including the business case, enabling technology, enabling standards and best practices.
- David Bernstein, VP/GM Software Group, Cisco, will analyze the “Fundamentals of Cloud Interoperability and Standards” by outlining the concepts of interoperability and standardization relative to cloud computing as well as name service extension, trust infrastructure and the introduction of a new addressing scheme to enable the separation of location and identification.
- Lauren States, vice president of Cloud Computing at IBM, will deliver a non-technical session focused on the business issues related to cloud computing such as capital investment, workforce mobility and productivity, scalable business services, and IT maintenance savings.
- Additional presenters include Jinesh Varia, technology evangelist, Amazon Web Services; Peter Coffee, director of Platform Research at Salesforce.com; Scott Radeztsky , chief technologist, Americas Systems Engineering, Sun Microsystems; Craig Lee, president, Open Grid Forum; and Robert Marcus, senior research engineer, SRI.
Regardless of the growing industry hype and term-saturation, the innovative business applications of cloud computing hold great promise for the enterprise, such as scalable business services, reduced capital investments, ubiquitous resource access for a mobile workforce and low IT maintenance costs. However, to evolve beyond its pioneering state, concerns about the cloud’s manageability, security and control of intellectual property need to be addressed by industry stakeholders, visionaries and vendor-neutral standards bodies such as The Open Group.
“As the IT world continues to innovate and advance enterprise architectures with revolutionary technologies such as cloud computing, The Open Group will strive to provide the necessary open forum for attendees to debate and educate each other on the issues, challenges and possibilities these ground-breaking technologies offer,” said Allen Brown, president and CEO, The Open Group. “With the Enterprise Cloud Computing Summit, we have the privilege and responsibility of driving the evolution of this relatively new computing paradigm to mature into a secure and standardized platform for enterprises to benefit worldwide.”
