SAN FRANCISCO, July 27, 2009 – The Open Group, a vendor- and technology-neutral consortium focused on open standards and global interoperability within and between enterprises, today announced the availability of the Universal Data Element Framework (UDEF), a standard information indexing mechanism, in French language. With the addition of this version, the standard is now available in three languages: French, Dutch and English. The Open Group UDEF Project, an initiative that is part of the organization’s Semantic Interoperability Working Group, spearheaded the development and also plans to release the UDEF standard in other languages, including Chinese, German and Spanish.
The UDEF simplifies information management by assigning global standard identifiers to items of data, ensuring consistent classification and thereby reducing the amount of time that software developers spend mapping between information from different sources, ultimately lowering software costs. As a standard, the UDEF is interoperable and can be used both within and between UDEF-enabled enterprises. The new French-language UDEF will allow companies internationally to take greater advantage of the standard’s cost-saving potential, by extending the potential of UDEF across language barriers.
“UDEF’s pragmatic solution is a vehicle on the roadmap to interoperability,” said Richard Parent, research agent, French-language committee for the Government of Quebec. “With a small amount of staff training and a relatively low investment, an enterprise can tag and categorize data in a standard and consistent way, greatly reducing the cost of programming and software development.”
“The French translation furthers the Open Group’s mission as a global consortium by giving different regions access to all deliverables and enabling interoperability to develop worldwide,” said Eric Boulay, representative of the French franchise of the Architecture Forum.
“We view the UDEF as a key tool for enterprise-wide information management, and, ultimately, semantic interoperability,” said Dr. Chris Harding, forum director for SOA and Semantic Interoperability at The Open Group. “This French translation, adding to the Dutch translation that was made available in September 2008, is an important step in furthering widespread adoption of the UDEF to support Boundaryless Information Flow™ internationally.”
