Background

In a New-Year email dated Jan 3rd 2006 to members of the Security Forum, Chairman Mike Jerbic (Trusted Systems Consulting) said:

'The coming of the new year seems a natural time to reflect upon the Security Forum, where it is, where it needs to go, and how it needs to get there. With Steve Whitlocks 'appointment as our new Vice-Chair, this is an excellent opportunity to re-evaluate the Forum's strategic direction.

The Open Group's Security Forum has become a discussion group - good for some things, but not necessarily focused on a particular class of problem that attracts a core nucleus of people willing to work on projects. We need to clearly articulate the Security Forum's mission and vision in a way that is compelling to others if we're going to attract the participation we want going forward.

Today, I'm inviting the interested members of the Security Forum to start a project that had as its objective a significant white paper intended for broad, outside Open Group, distribution on the state of security for the extended global enterprise. The conclusions and recommended actions coming out of that white paper would be the foundation of the Security Forum's mission and vision. Let us not limit ourselves purely to thinking about technology but let us include everything we know about in the problem to drive the comprehensive actions in the solutions. From there we can pick the Security Forum's function in solving it and role in the global security arena, answering the questions:
- 'Where is our core competency?'
- 'What do we stand for?'
- 'Why are we here?' and
- 'Who else do we really need to work with?'

I have many ideas in this area, as I'm sure you do, but I am reluctant to present them in the beginning of the discussion, preferring first to assemble a group of like minded people interested in writing a strategic white paper based upon the group's combined experience. To make this paper more valuable, I'm suggesting that The Open Group push the paper out to other potentially like minded individuals we know of. We should plan to push this paper to former conference plenary speakers, CIOs, CTOs, Chief Risk Officers, Chief Legal Officers of our member companies, and other organizations we've worked with in the past. Information security is a multidimensional problem, and we need to inform a wide range of interest groups of what we believe needs to be done and what we plan to do about it.

I invite you now to join Steve and me in forming the team to write such a position paper - I'm happy to organize and lead this project, but it must have member support to be successful.'

Mike then invited members to indicate their interest in participating in this project, and suggest others who we should invite.

Vice-Vhair Support

Vice-Chair Steve Whitlock (Boeing) added his endorsement of this call, in an email dated Jan 7th to Security Forum members:

'I would like to add my endorsement to Mike's proposa. It seems like as our industry grows and technology changes we need to periodically reinvent ourselves in order to continue to provide value to our membership. I believe that this is one of times and that producing the paper Mike describes will both help us focus on where we can contribute and also attract new members to the Security Forum.'

and Steve went on to encourage members to give their support to this project.
