The Universal Data Element Framework (UDEF) is a standard way of indexing enterprise information that can produce big cost savings. At present, the UDEF definitions are available in the English and Dutch languages and catalogue about 1.4 million data element concepts. Multiple national language versions of the UDEF will enable information systems with data models defined in different languages to exchange meaningful information without any mutual knowledge of each other’s language. This will contribute significantly to The Open Group vision of Boundaryless Information Flow.

A Dutch language team has been formed. It started its activities in September 2007, and completed the review of a first translated version of UDEF in March 2008. This has resulted in the ratification of UDEF 1.1 by The Open Group board in both English and Dutch as of July 2008. A French language team also has been formed. It started its activities in October 2008, and completed the review of a translated version in May 2009. German, Chinese, South-African and Spanish language teams are currently being formed, and additional languages are planned.

Call to Action

People interested in extending the domain of applicability of UDEF to information systems with data models in their national languages are invited to join the national language teams for creating these national language versions of the UDEF.

Currently, team-members are being invited for initial versions in German, Chinese, South-African and Spanish. Individuals interested in the creation of language teams for other languages, in particular Italian, Greek, Swedish, Bulgarian, Portuguese and Japanese or any other language for which a business demand is imminent, are also invited. Joining the Dutch and French language team is still welcomed for maintenance and further rollout in Dutch and French language area's  and for support of the extensios with Dutch and French version extenstions, respectively. As the multilangual availability of UDEF evolves, this call will be updated with some frequency.

The national language teams will (mainly through conference calls) review and discuss draft initial translated versions of the UDEF in order to bring them up to the same level as the latest released English version and facilitate the preparatory work to establish these versions formally. Subsequent national language teams will also engage in creating initial drafts in additional languages.

After initial release of a new national language version, the team will maintain it to keep it up-to-date with extensions to the UDEF as they are approved by The Open Group Board.

The Dutch language team has commenced its activities in September 2007, and completed the review of a first translated version of UDEF in March 2008. This has resulted in formal approval of UDEF version 1.1 in July 2008. In the subsequent period the Dutch language team will spend further effort on documentation to make Dutch available as an additional base language, equivalent to English. The French language team started its work in October 2008, and completed the review of a translated version of UDEF in May 2009. This has resulted in UDEF version 1.2 which is due for approval by the OpenGroup board in July 2009.

Qualified team members of national language teams fit the following profile:

  • Native speaker in national language (Dutch, German, French, Chinese, South-African, and/or Spanish respectively for the current teams)
  • Excellent knowledge of at least English and preferably (m)any of the other already available languages (Dutch, French)
  • Experienced information architect
  • Deep understanding of datamodelling
  • Understanding the concepts and principles by which UDEF is designed
  • Committed to the shared view of OpenGroup to make Boundaryless Informationflow happen

To join a national language team:

  1. If you are not already a member of the UDEF Interested Parties Group, you should join it.
  2. If you did not already have an Open Group password, one will be generated and mailed to you. (This may take up to 30 minutes).
  3. Log in to the UDEF Mailing Lists page at http://www.opengroup.org/projects/udef/protected/mailinglists.tpl?CALLER=newdoc.tpl&.
  4. Subscribe to the appropriate national language team list. If the mailinglist for the language team of your choice is not yet created, please contact Chris Harding to create one.
Subscribers to the UDEF-NL mailinglist are invited to join conference calls to be resumed in September 2008. This team will be maintaining the extension process for the Dutch version and will coordinate dissemination of UDEF in Dutch language domain.

Subscribers to the UDEF-FR mailinglist are invited to join conference calls to be resumed in June 2009. This team will be maintaining the extension process for the French version and will coordinate dissemination of UDEF in French language domain.

Subscribers of the UDEF-DE,  the UDEF-CN, the UDEF-ZA and the UDEF-ES mailinglists will be invited to join conference calls as soon as the participation has grown to the minimum required number of qualified experts, respectively. The UDEF-ES mailinglist will be created shortly.

The following languages are likely to be initiated during 2009 or 2010: Italian, Greek, Swedish, Bulgarian, Portuguese, Japanese. Qualified people wanting to support UDEF in any of these languages can contact one of the persons mentioned below.

Any volonteers who qualify the profile above for any other language are welcomed to initiate new language teams.

Please contact Chris Harding if you have any problems. For any further questions regarding UDEF internationalisation contact Arnold van Overeem.
