Company Profile The Open Group was formed by merging the Open Software Foundation (OSF), with its expertise in technology research and collaborative development projects, and X/Open Company Ltd., with its expertise in requirements gathering, product standard specification, and management of the internationally recognized brand for open systems development and purchase. The Open Group was formed to help suppliers and consumers in the information technology industry accelerate the research, development, and deployment of open systems. Operating at the nexus of technology innovation and standardization, The Open Group, and its more than 300 member organizations, helps the industry advance technologically while managing the change caused by innovation.

The Open Group accomplishes its mission by leading collaboration among customers, system and software vendors, and other consortia and standards groups to expedite timely vendor responses to customers' current and future requirements by:

  • Consolidating and prioritizing these requirements. The Open Group Customer Council, a combination of OSF and X/Open user groups, provides the open systems industry with a unified customer voice for open systems requirements current and future. System vendors and independent software vendors benefit from the clear direction, and massive buying power, of the Customer Council members.
  • Conducting innovative research and advanced development. The Open Group Research Institute collaborates with industry, academia, and government agencies to deliver innovation and economy. Innovation by providing solutions to difficult system technology requirements, and economy by providing a vehicle for shared investment in research. The bottom line is faster time-to-market for emerging open systems technology.
  • Managing the cost-effective development and accelerating the consistent multi-vendor deployment of technology in response to customer requirements.
  • Adopting, adapting, integrating, and encouraging the use of industry standard specifications. The Open Group's integration and publication of industry-approved open systems specifications provides an essential set of blueprints for building open information systems and integrating new technology as it becomes available.
  • Licensing and promoting its brand which designates products that conform to open systems standards. The brand enables vendors to guarantee their products' conformance to international open systems standards. For customers, the brand provides a powerful tool for the procurement of open systems technology.
  • Promoting the benefits of open systems to customers, vendors, and the public.

Contribution
to OBOE
On the X/Open side The Open Group's core competencies include timely consensus building, specification development, production and publishing, test systems strategy, development and maintenance and product compatibility assurance branding. In the OBOE project, X/Open will take advantage of its skills, leadership position and strong relationships. The technology developed and proven through OBOE will have a direct route to market as part of the industry's solution to component interoperability.
