Distributed Internationalisation Services, Version 2
The current model for producing internationalised software was developed at a time when systems were typically stand-alone, with character-based terminals. For such environments, the current global internationalisation model based on setlocale() is a reasonable solution, but it has limitations; for example, in distributed software or software designed to interact simultaneously with several users, each of which uses different customs and conventions. This document is a recommendation to address the limitations of the current model. This Snapshot of current thinking seeks input from those working in the field of distributed internationalisation.
