X/Open and Object Technology
This document (Part 1) considers the relevance of object-oriented technologies to open systems. It gives an overview of the key features of object-oriented technologies and the benefits which, it is claimed, arise from their use. It also looks at current and future exploitation of object-oriented technologies in the open systems arena, drawing on the information obtained from a series of interviews conducted with representatives of a number of X/Open member companies. The book (Part 2) introduces the essential nature of managed objects and the necessary framework for defining them. It discusses the managed object definition and development process, and explores the issues involved in registering them. It also discusses conformance testing. The overall aim of this book is to aid system administrators to manage a network of heterogeneous systems as a single logical system employing object-oriented techniques.
