DCE SIG INFO SHEET

INTRODUCTION

The purpose of this document is to provide a single place where all the basic info relating to the DCE SIG can be found. This document could be viewed as a Everything you always wanted to know about the DCE SIG ... document.

CHARTER OF THE DCE SIG

The purpose of the SIG is to provide input and assistance to the OSF in the area of distributed computing. Specifically, the SIG is chartered:

  1. To propose enhancements to OSF to the existing DCE offering, and to help prioritize their relative importance.
  2. To make recommendations as to which new or emerging technologies should be included in some future version of DCE. This includes providing input to help OSF draft an RFT for a future distributed computing technology. This also involves recommendations to OSF in regards to the most effective way to acquire such technology.
  3. To provide feedback to OSF on the business issues related to pricing, packaging, licensing, and marketing of the DCE technologies.
  4. To provide a liasion between OSF and various standards forums.
  5. To insure that technical issues which relate to both the DCE SIG and other OSF SIGs, are resolved quickly and appropriately, and in a way which does not compromise the success of the DCE.
  6. To provide a forum in which issues and status related to the progress and status of the DCE development can be communicated to all SIG members.

SIG MEETINGS AND MEMBERSHIP

SIG meetings are held primarily in Cambridge, Massachusetts, at the OSF headquarters. Meetings start at 9 am on the first day, and conclude in mid-afternoon of the second day of the meeting. The meetings are currently chaired by Sumner Blount (DEC).

There are NO prerequisites for attendance at the SIG meetings, except OSF membership. You don't need to sign up in advance, or inform the SIG chair or OSF that you will be coming. Just show up!

ELECTRONIC COMMUNICATIONS

The Internet email distribution list for the DCE SIG is called dce-sig@osf.org. To get on this distribution list, send your electronic mailing address to postmaster@osf.org, or sig-dce-request@osf.org. and request that your name be added. Please do NOT send your name to the SIG chairperson, or to the whole distribution list. To get on the distribution list for any of the subgroups listed below, follow the same procedure and request the appropriate distribution list.

OSF also administers the DCE-RFC series of technical notes, which archives DCE SIG communications having some lasting value. See DCE-RFC 0 for complete details.

SIG WORKING GROUPS

The SIG has a number of working groups (or sub-SIG's), each of which is focused on a particular area. In order to create a new working group, you must make a formal proposal (just discuss your idea) at a SIG meeting, and if there are enough people who will want to participate, we can establish a new working group.
