Meeting Summary

Real-time and Embedded Systems -- Boston 2002

Joe Bergmann, Forum Director

What happened this week

Joe reported on 'a jam-packed week'.  On Real Time Profiles & Certification the Forum had received an update from IEEE PASC on their work on Application defined scheduling and Distributed Real Time Communications, and a demonstration from James de Raeve on 'Certification via the Web'.

In the area of Real-Time Java, the group had made a commitment to develop two Java Specification Requests (JSR) for submittal to the Java Community Process for approval, as the first step towards setting up a Java Real-Time expert group.  A lot of work is involved with this, but there are companies on both side of the Atlantic willing to help.

The Forum agreed to conduct additional work sessions on Real Time Security to facilitate development of a generic Common Criteria Real Time Protection Profile, followed by a series of domain specific Protection Profiles, beginning with  aviation and digital controls for car plants.

The Safety Critical White Paper is now complete and will be posted on Web, and work is now planned to identify common tools to support Safety Critical Systems and preparation of artefacts.

The group discussed Real Time infrastructure requirements for Pervasive Computing and Telematics, and reviewed requirements for tools to generate those requirements automatically.

Finally, Sally Long had reported on the Real Time/Quality of Service Challenge

Next steps

Joe reported on the plans the Forum had made for its future work:

  • Focus on the Boundaryless Information Flow
  • Increase emphasis on membership - as a step towards solving the problems of resourcing the work that had been identified, the Forum is to look at setting up a network of Universities for whom these might be suitable research activities.  Several US Universities had been identified as possible partners, and in Europe it was hoped to work with the National Research Laboratories in each country.
  • Reduce the number of Working Groups - the Forum had help five parallel tracks on Thursday, which had limited the scope for individual participation.
  • Verify Real Time Profiles for Certification
  • Support Real Time/Quality of Service Challenge
  • Additional joint meetings with
    • Security Forum (Protection Profiles)
    • MMF/DIF Joint (Directory Services for Real Time)
    • Enterprise Management Forum (Pegasus)
    • Architecture Forum (Real-Time)
  • Partner with other Real Time Groups: OMG,  The InterNational Committee for Information Technology (INCITS R1),  The Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE), etc
