20 years in IT. 11 years with CGI (formerly AMS) in a variety of roles encompassing technical and functional architecture, project management, offering development and pre-sales (on one occasion all of these at once). I was a founding member of the AMS Technical Architect community and am active in the CGI Technology Focus Network. Functionally my expertise is in telecommunications - mostly mobile. I have worked on projects for many different European telcos in pretty much all areas of OSS and BSS. I like variety and thrive on it. Over the last few years I've been something of an evangelist for SOA within CGI and for various clients. Before IT, I tried very hard to make a living playing music but never quite made it. I still play in my spare time. I have a son aged 15 who
plays in a metal band. I'm a dedicated distance runner and an unrepentant hippy.

The relationship between SOA and BPM - is there one?
The SOA community (gurus, practitioners and opinion makers) are divided about the relationship between these concepts. Some maintain fiercely that they are joined at the hip, whilst others fight to maintain their independence. Whatever the reasons for these differences (e.g. commercial, principled, resistance to change), it is important to have some understanding of how the two might relate, cooperate or conflict. The relationship is also relevant to the development of a SOA reference architecture, which is a current activity within the Open Group. The presentation will look at some basic ideas from BPM as well as various perspectives from the SOA community. Both
business and technical issues will be taken into account. Some commercially published
“reference” architectures for SOA will be examined from this point of view. The objective
of the presentation is not to unveil the true gospel but to provoke discussion in the hope of
achieving greater convergence and perhaps some useful guidelines.
