Security Industry News

Last month was the Infosecurity 2004 show in London, England. It was very well attended by government and industry. The UK Department of Trade launched the 2004 information security breaches survey. It made depressing reading.
Basically, nothing much has changed in the industrial attitude to computer security in the last two years. Much may have been said, but little has been done. This seems in stark contrast to the efforts of groups such as Homeland Security and the claims published by them and ISSA last December. Maybe the USA is different, and maybe not.

What are the really hot topics right now? Number one has got to be SPAM. It is almost combined with e-mail born viruses and worms as top of the management agenda. But coming along right behind are two quite different problems. For the technologists the zero day virus (patching) problem is the nightmare scenario. Managers face a different problem - confidentiality. From techie to top manager we are having to get our minds closer to the encryption problem. Current practices using SSL are not likely to cut it going forwards, because those solutions do not protect content, just connection. And even the connection may not be as clear as has been claimed.

We live in interesting times.
