Desktop Program Group Overview
|
The primary purpose of the Desktop Program Group is to ensure that market
requirements regarding the desktop are taken into account in all relevant
activities that The Open Group undertakes. The Desktop Program Group will
keep a pulse on the desktop marketplace in an effort to track desktop
technology trends, analyze the benefits these technologies bring, articulate
customer requirements, and track the progress of those requirements as
desktop technologies evolves. The Desktop Program Group will:
- Provide a forum where customers, software suppliers and system vendors can exchange ideas, experiences and opinions.
- Identify, articulate and pursue prioritized business requirements, taking
into account the needs of all relevant industry sectors.
- Monitor the work of technology development projects to ensure that
they address desktop requirements.
- Monitor the desktop marketplace in an effort to understand and track
desktop technology trends and analyze the benefits and impact.
- Contribute to the definition of branding programs associated with desktop standards.
- Act as a liaison with other groups that have an interest in the desktop and the evolution of common requirements.
The Desktop Program Group is concentrating on building a coherent open
systems picture of the user's desktop, including emerging desktop
technologies (e.g., Java, ActiveX, X) and paradigms (e.g., NCRP), user
interface, security, interoperability, and standards.
