The Open Group's work on conformance testing has been focused on testing implementations of platform products. There have been frequent requests by software developers wishing to prove the conformance of application software and middleware. This is a completely different kind of testing and presents a fresh set of challenges.
Briefly explained, this type of testing seeks to establish that the software uses no more APIs than described in the relevant specification and that it uses these correctly. By contrast, platforms must provide no less than the specified set of APIs.
Working with a number of partners in the European project called OMI/DEPLOY, The Open Group is in the process of bringing a suitable test technology to market. This will take the form of a static checking tool that works alongside conventional C compilers. It is controlled by an API description file that can be set up to specify the correct API set.
The first release of this technology is now available.
The Open Group is looking for organisations wishing to participate in the development and proving of the DEPLOY technology. You can register your interest by sending e-mail to p.tanner@opengroup.org.
