1.2 Mandatory TOGAF Support

1.2.1 TOGAF Architecture Development Method (ADM) - Process

Question 1: Does the Tool provide support for modeling the process of the TOGAF 8 ADM? If so, indicate how that support is achieved.

Enter "Yes" or "No" as appropriate; for each "yes", provide the appropriate tool documentation reference.

Response:
Function Response: Tool Documentation Reference:(s)
The tool provides a usable model of the TOGAF 8 ADM "out-of-the-box". Yes ARIS provides a reference database containing a model of the full TOGAF ADM, including details of inputs/outputs and all steps that need to be undertaken. Moreover, suitable diagramming techniques are suggested for ADM steps. This TOGAF 8 reference database is a part of ARIS installation package.
The tool provides a general capability to model the TOGAF 8 ADM, which the user must customize. Yes ARIS users can also build their own representation of the TOGAF ADM, or customise the supplied model, if required. Customization of structuring architecture framework such as TOGAF is a standard part of ARIS Value Engineering Method for Enterprise Architecture that uses ARIS Platform to establish and govern Enterprise Architecture.
The tool provides the capability to work with another tool that can model the TOGAF 8 ADM (the net effect of the tool combination being to meet the mandatory criteria for modeling the process of the TOGAF 8 ADM). Yes ARIS is open environment that enables integration with other tools when external sources needed. Although, ARIS does not require another tool to support the modelling the TOGAF ADM, because whole ADM is covered by ARIS itself.

Question 2: Does the tool support the export of graphical and textual artefacts for use in the ADM documents that require them? If so, declare the mechanism(s) used.

Enter "Yes" or "No" as appropriate; for "yes", provide the appropriate tool documentation reference(s).

Response:
Response: Tool Documentation Reference:(s)
Yes ARIS provides several ways to export graphical and textual artefacts:
  • Users may export content in XML format
  • Users may export graphics in Windows Enhanced Metafile (emf) format
  • Users may create reports (either using standard or customer-specified reports) that contain textual and graphical information (output formats - Word, RFT, PDF, Excel, TXT etc)
  • Artefacts can be published using ARIS Business Publisher to enable review or modification by web portal users. (statically as HTML or dynamically as JSP\servlets)
Rationale:

In order to participate in the TOGAF 8 TOOL SUPPORT certification program, the Tool must support the modeling of the sequence and content of the Phases, Steps, and Activities comprising the TOGAF 8 Architecture Development Method. The tool must also support the export of graphical and textual artefacts for use in the ADM documents that require them.

1.2.2 TOGAF Architecture Development Method (ADM) - Deliverables

Question 3: Does the Tool provide support for storing and reusing the graphical and textual artefacts of the deliverables of the ADM?

Response:

Enter "Yes" or "No" as appropriate; for each "yes", provide the appropriate tool documentation reference(s).

Function Response: Tool Documentation Reference:(s)
Business Architecture Yes ARIS supports a wide range of model types required to construct a Business Architecture, including: process models (e.g. EPC, BPMN), functional decomposition diagrams (Function Trees), strategy models (e.g. Objective Diagram, Balanced Scorecard Cause & Effect Diagram), Organisation Charts etc.

ARIS provides models to support the description of logical and physical infrastructures (e.g. hardware, software, networks, etc.).
Architecture Views Yes ARIS is a flexible modelling tool that allows a wide variety of views to be constructed across all of the architectures. Each model type (or combination of model types) can be defined as a viewpoint and can be used as the basis for views creation. Views are defined as a set of objects of given object types organized into one or many models of a given model type. ARIS allows the adaptation of viewpoint definition with its configuration mechanism.
Architecture Building Blocks Yes Architecture Building Blocks can be defined in ARIS using standard and customer specified attributes and models. The ARIS repository structure can be tailored to hold Architecture Building Blocks in specific customer-specified folders.

Question 4: Does the Tool provide support for defining and maintaining the relationships between these artefacts? If so, declare the mechanism(s) used.

Enter "Yes" or "No" as appropriate; for "yes", provide the appropriate tool documentation reference(s).

Response:
Response: Tool Documentation Reference:(s)
Yes Using relations is the essential modelling technique in ARIS. There is wide support for creating and maintaining relationships between artefacts from different architectures: business, application, information, technology. Moreover, relationships types between artefacts types can be defined and maintained using the configuration features within ARIS (ARIS Filter). Commonly used relationship types are available out of the box and then can be customised to meet a user's specific needs.
Rationale:

In order to participate in the TOGAF 8 TOOL SUPPORT certification program, the Tool must support the development of the above deliverables of the ADM. To achieve this, the tool must be capable of storing the definitive source of both the graphical and textual artefacts of those products, and enabling their maintenance and use through the ADM by architecture practitioners. The tool must also support the ability to define required relationships between artefacts.

The tool provides a usable model of the TOGAF 8 TRM "out-of-the-box" Yes The TOGAF TRM is provided as a set of models and objects in ARIS that will enable a user to adopt or modify the standard TRM to meet their specific needs. See TOGAF 8 reference database in ARIS Platform installation package.
The tool provides a general capability to model the TOGAF 8 TRM, which the user must customize. Yes The TRM can be used as supplied, or it can be customised by the user in accordance with ARIS EA approaches or specific corporate requirements.

Question 6: Does the Tool provide support for referencing (hence re-using) the information held in a Standards Information Base?If so, declare the mechanisms used.

Enter "Yes" or "No" as appropriate; for each "yes", provide the appropriate tool documentation reference(s).

Response:
Function Response: Tool Documentation Reference:(s)
Support via creating a Standards Information Base within the tool Yes The TOGAF Standards Information Base is available as a model and set of objects in ARIS. See TOGAF 8 reference database in ARIS Platform installation package.
Support via importing a Standards Information Base Yes Other standards can be imported using the ARIS Excel or XML import functionalities.
Support via dynamic linkages to a Standards Information Base Yes Users can link out to external standards held in documents, web pages, etc.
Rationale:

In order to participate in the TOGAF 8 TOOL SUPPORT certification program, the Tool must provide support for modeling the TOGAF Technical Reference: Model (including the detailed taxonomy), either "out-of-the-box", or via a general capability, which the user must customize. The tool  must also provide support for updating this model to generate an organization-specific TRM.

The Tool must provide support for referencing (hence re-using) the information held in a Standards Information Base (but not necessarily holding the information in the tool itself); and supporting the definition of relationships between SIB and TRM components.
