How can I achieve certification?

You first need to decide the level you would like to study for, and then after a period of study, attending a training course or by self-study, take the applicable examinations.

What is the difference between accredited and non-accredited training?

Accredited training course providers are subject to an assessment both of the course and also their personnel and organization. In addition all accredited trainers include in their course fee the examination, either on site as part of the course or a voucher to attend a public Prometric test center. Some Accredited trainers also have permission to distribute official TOGAF materials, such as the official TOGAF 9 standard with their course materials.

How do the certifications relate to the Part 1, and Part 2 xams?

The exams are what you need to pass to reach a certification qualification. There are a number of examinations providing paths to become TOGAF 9 Certified. This is explained further below.

What is the retake policy if i fail an Examination?

Candidates who fail an examination are not allowed to re-set ANY TOGAF examination again for a period of one (1) month. A result received before one month will be VOID.

What are my options if I am TOGAF 8 Certified?

The upgrade path has now expired. Individuals who have qualified as TOGAF 8 Certified can obtain TOGAF 9 certification as detailed below.

What are the study paths to become TOGAF 9 Certified?

The paths to certification and applicable examinations are shown in the diagram below:

How can I find out about the syllabus and examinations?

Firstly to obtain a high level view, you should read the datasheets above for the appropriate level or path for certification you are considering. For detail of the learning outcomes required see the Conformance Requirements document.

Conformance Requirements

There are four examinations as follows:

  • TOGAF 9 Part 1 - Pass mark 55% (22 or more points out of a maximum of 40)

This exam comprises 40 questions in simple multiple choice format, covering the Level 1 learning outcomes (see the Conformance Requirements for detail). Each correct answer scores a single point.

  • TOGAF 9 Part 2 - Pass mark 60% (24 or more points out of a maximum of 40)

This exam comprises 8 complex scenario questions, with gradient scoring. This exam is open book and covers the complete Level 2 learning outcomes. The correct answer scores 5 points, the second best answer 3 points, the third best answer 1 point. The distracter scores zero points.

  • TOGAF 9 Combined Part 1 and 2 - This is a combined TOGAF 9 Part 1 and Part 2 examination for candidates who want to achieve Level 2 certification directly in a single examination. It consists of two sections, with pass marks as per the TOGAF 9 Part 1 and 2 examinations described above. Each section must be passed in order to obtain an overall pass mark. If you fail a section then no certification is awarded, however you only need retake the Examination(s) corresponding to the failed section(s).

Further information follows below at the end of this page.

What are the eligibility requirements for the Exams?

The following sections detail the eligibility requirements. Note that ineligible candidates will be disqualified from the exam and no fees refunded.

TOGAF 9 Part 1 exam

There are no prerequisites for the TOGAF 9 Part 1. Any and all candidates are thus eligible to take this examination.

TOGAF 9 Part 2 exam

A candidate must be certified to TOGAF 9 Foundation or have achieved a pass result for the TOGAF 9 Part 1 examination on the same day at the same ATTC provider as they are taking the Part 2 examination.

For candidates not taking the Part 1 exam in the same session, a candidate must have a TOGAF 9 Foundation entry in the Directory of Certified People at http://www.opengroup.org/togaf9/cert/register.html or have passed at least the Part 1 section of the Combined examination.

Candidates are obliged to provide their Personal Conformation Code to the ATTC provider if they have set their directory entry to confidential.

TOGAF 9 Combined Part 1 and 2 exam

There are no prerequisites for the TOGAF 9 Combined Part 1 and 2 Exam. Any and all candidates are thus eligible to take this examination.

What is the difference between the Combined Part 1 and Part 2 Examination and taking the exams separately?

The Combined Part 1 and Part 2 examination is designed for candidates who want to go to TOGAF 9 Certified without the intermediate step of TOGAF 9 Foundation, and who want to take both papers in one examination session. If you take the exams separately and only pass Part 1 you will be awarded TOGAF 9 Foundation. If you take the Combined Exam, and fail a section, you will need to retake the failed section(s) before certification will be awarded.

If I fail can I retake an exam immediately?

No, the certification policy has a minimum period before you can retake an examination. This is currently one month. If you retake before that period your test result will be void. This applies to all TOGAF 9 examinations, so for example, if you fail the Part 1 section of the TOGAF 9 Combined Part 1 and Part 2 examination, you would still need to wait at least one month before taking the Part 1 examination, similarly for the Part 2.

How can I find a training course?

You can find an available accredited training course either by viewing the public calendar of accredited TOGAF 9 Training Courses or by contacting a provider using the register link on the left or selecting this link . Click on the course name entry and the detailed page should give you a web link to the company that offers the course. As part of the package of attending the qualifying course, the training organization may offer facilities to take the examination, or may supply vouchers for you to take the examination at an authorized examination center.

Are there self-study materials?

Two study guides are available. The first of which covers the TOGAF 9 Foundation. The second is the companion document covering the learning outcomes beyond the Foundation level for TOGAF 9 Certified.

The two study guides can also be bought together as a bundle with additional supporting material, see here.

Other materials, such as the TOGAF book can be purchased from The Open Group (see www.togaf.info).

How do I locate a test center?

If you attend an accredited course then the examination may be given as part of the course (check with your course provider), otherwise you can attend a Prometric test center.

What allowances are made for non-native English speakers?

Additional time is permitted for individuals for whom English is a second language (ESL). ESL candidates are permitted to bring a translation dictionary into the exam (subject to Proctor inspection). When registering via the Prometric web site you can select the ESL version of the exam at the point, if its available for your location. See further below for advice if an ESL option is not available.

Are the Exams available in different languages?

Initially the exams are available in English worldwide. Simplified Chinese language versions of the exams are available via Prometric in China. A Brazilian Portuguese version of the TOGAF 9 Part 1 and TOGAF 9 Part 2 exams are available in Brazil. The Open Group Japan provides Japanese language versions in Japan.

Over time where there is market demand we plan to provide translated versions of the exams.

For the Open Book exams, what books are allowed to be taken into the exam?

For the open book exams, the test center provides either a hardcopy or a pdf copy of the applicable text book. Note at Prometric test centers, they operate a clean room examination environment and only the pdf edition is available and is packaged as part of the test -- when running the test selecting the REFERENCE button will pop up a pdf version of TOGAF 9

The applicable text book for the current examinations is the TOGAF 9.1 standard.

Attending a Prometric Test center

Why does the Exam Duration for a Prometric test center not match your exam times?

The times that Prometric quote include additional time for the registration, tutorial and survey, so for an exam lasting two hours duration they will allow 3 hours and 15 minutes duration for the appointment. During the examination it will display the duration at the start, and also how long is remaining in a countdown timer.

English is my second language yet I am not offered the ESL exam when booking at Prometric

You should not make a booking for the examination. You should contact the Prometric Special Accommodations team to apply to register as an ESL candidate. They can be contacted at 1-800-443-1684. In some cases independent verification of the need for the ESL examination will be requested, especially in countries where the default business language is English and the candidate has been resident for more than 18 months. Confirmation of eligibity for the ESL examination must be received from Prometric prior to booking the examination and attending the test center.
