VPIM Directory ComponentsFollowing components illustrate how directories can be used in voice messaging systems (VMS) :A — Voice Messaging Directory Client
![]() Direct Mapping'A' and 'B' components are VMSs which use LDAP for mapping from telephone number to SMTP address before sending a message.Indirect Mapping'X' components do not directly support LDAP and must rely on 'Y' components to perform the required address mapping. 'X' components send all out-going SMTP voice messages to a 'Y' host. Outgoing SMTP messages from 'X' are addressed (i.e., local-part@domain-part) with the telephone number of the intended recipient in the local-part. The domain-part identifies an SMTP 'Y' host. When a 'Y' component receives a message from an 'X' component, it uses LDAP to map from telephone to SMTP address. The 'Y' component then resubmits the message using the new address.AbbreviationsDISP — Directory Information Shadowing Protocol (X.500 Server-Server Replication Protocol)DSA — Directory Service Agent (X.500 Directory Server) DSP — Directory Service Protocol (X.500 Server-Server Protocol) LDAP — Light-Weight Directory Access Protocol (Internet Directory Access Protocol) SMTP — Simple Mail Transfer Protocol (Internet Messaging Protocol) VMS — Voice Messaging System VPIM — Voice Profile for Internet Mail For more information about this page, please contact Anne (Philpott)
