CORBA Validation - the VSOrb & VSJOrb Test Technologies

Objectives and Approach

Background:

Object Orientation is the next software development paradigm that will sweep through the world of Information Technology. Essential to the successful deployment of Object Technology is the ability for client programs to be able to request services from objects by binding to a consistent, well defined interface without regard to the physical location of the server object that will carry out the requested service.

The Common Object Request Broker Architecture specification (CORBA) published by the Object Management Group, and forming part of The Open Group's set of Open Systems specifications known as the Common Application Environment (CAE), describes a software "bus" that provides this connection between clients and server objects in a distributed environment.

The products that perform this function are called Object Request Brokers (ORBs). Until now, there haven't been tools available to help ORB developers, system integrators and users ensure that competitive implementations of the ORB implementations are interoperable and provide the needed consistency of services to client applications and server objects. The VSOrb and VSJOrb test suites assess ORB functionality for conformance with the CORBA specification. VSOrb tests ORBs with C and/or C++ language mappings and VSJOrb tests products with Java language mappings.

Objectives:

The objective of the VSOrb and VSJOrb projects is to facilitate and encourage multi-vendor deployment of Object Request Brokers (ORBs) by developing and bringing to market:

Approach:

The approach is to:

Project status

The VSOrb test suite has reached 'General Availability' status and is therefore on sale to other users. Work continues on the design and planning for the launch of the Brand. VSJOrb is scheduled for 'General Availability' in Q3 of 1998.

Test suite development

Development of the test suites is managed by The Open Group, but involves substantial input from companies who have bought early test suite licenses. The "Test Suite Development Groups" (TDGs) review the test suite specification and early releases. For information on the benefits of TDG membership, please mail Howard Greenwell (h.greenwell@opengroup.org) with your contact information and a brief description of your area of interest.

Test tools for the Project are being developed by The Open Group and its partners

This project is being part funded under the European Commission ESPRIT Framework IV RTD in Information Technologies Programme 1994-1998.

A home page for this CORVAL project is also available.

In addition to this public section there are protected areas for each of the Test Suite Development groups, VSORB (ogvgorb) and VSJORB (ogvgjorb).

Support customers also have protected areas, for each of VSORB (vsorb_users) and VSJORB (vsjorb_users)
