This document is a brief guide for suppliers who want to certify products in the WAP
Certification Program. Please read this 'getting started' guide and the
following information prior to applying for certification.
- WAP Conformance Process and Certification Policy
- Terms of the WAP Certification Agreement
- Terms of the WAP Certification Mark License Agreement
- The FAQs - Frequently Asked Questions
Certification is a formal process (see flow diagram). A
supplier of a certified product warrants and represents that the product meets all the
conformance requirements of the WAP 2.0 Class Conformance Requirements, and all the
implemented features claimed in your Implementation Conformance Statement (ICS).
The steps for certification are based on the WAP Conformance Process and Certification
Policy. It is necessary at all times to adhere to the requirements of that document.
In brief, the process involves:
- Testing your product informally.
- Obtaining the ICS Editor.
- Completing an Implementation Conformance Statement (ICS) and validating the WAP features
your product supports.
- Applying for product certification by submitting the validated ICS, and by signing and
submitting the WAP Certification Agreement which acts as your application form.
- On receipt of these documents, The Open Group generates a 'test campaign' which includes
details of your REFSET (the set of servers or clients against which your device will be
tested), using your ICS information.
- The Open Group then sets up a 90-day testing account (including access to the
certification version of VSWAP), and informs you of the test sessions required and contact
details for your REFSET partners.
- Performing formal testing according to the test campaign.
- Filing Problem Reports if necessary (PRs).
- Submitting the test results to The Open Group.
- The Open Group audits your test results and, if approved, awards WAP2.0 Certification.
- If you wish to use the WAP Certification Mark, entering into a Certification Mark
License Agreement with The Open Group.
Testing and certification are both conducted on a secure server. Your company and
product details are absolutely confidential between you and The Open Group. We do
not make any certification information available to any third party without written
permission of the supplier. This written permission will only be acted upon if you
have signed a License Agreement with The Open Group. Certification will remain
private unless you request that the information is made available on the published
register.
Informal Testing during Product Development
During the product development phase, you may pre-test your product by using TSWAP.
This test suite is specially designed for development testing and is available on a
subscription basis for online access over varying periods of months, or in downloadable
form.
More information is available at our Testing
Services web pages. The certification test
suite - VSWAP is only made available when you have formally applied to certify a product.
The ICS Editor
The ICS Editor is a Java application and must be licensed from The Open
Group. It
is through this Editor that you are given access to the WAP 2.0 Implementation
Conformance Statement (ICS) - a key requirement in order to apply for WAP
certification.
The ICS Editor is downloadable and needs a special license key supplied
by The Open Group. The Editor licence key
is free and can be obtained by contacting us.The Editor is a powerful
tool which lists the WAP specification features to help you identify those
supported
by your product, and performs
validation
checks. Validation shows you if all the mandatory conformance requirements
have been met and also the dependencies of the optional features.
The Implementation Conformance Statement (ICS)
Applying for certification requires completing an ICS. The ICS Proforma is a set of
questions about the class of your product and the entire set of features (both mandatory
and optional) that are implemented in your product. Completing the ICS involves
following a series of steps which are explained at each stage.
You can create and save your ICS which should then be validated automatically by the
ICS editor tool. The validation check helps to prevent any mandatory features
being omitted or any invalid options being chosen.
The WAP Certification Agreement
Another step when applying for certification is to submit a signed WAP Certification
Agreement. The ICS Editor automatically attaches a copy of the Agreement to the
front of your completed and validated ICS. The Certification Agreement combined with your
validated ICS is your application for certification. The Agreement needs signing before
faxing or mailing the application to The Open Group. By signing, your organization is
agreeing to the terms and conditions of WAP 2.0 certification as set out in the Policy
document.
Payment of the Certification fee
is due within 30 days after The Open Group opens your Formal Testing account.
The ICS forms the basis of the WAP Test Report (WTR). After certification is
complete the WTR will record the supported features which were tested and those that
were not. You will have access to your WTR either to download or email it to your
customers.
Formal Testing for Certification
Formal testing starts with the Static Conformance Review (SCR). The submitted ICS
is examined by The Open Group and a REFSET is selected in order to maximize test coverage
of the optional features claimed for the product. Under normal conditions, the
minimum number of devices in the REFSET is three and the maximum is five. If the REFPOOL
is limited, then the minimum may be two REFSET devices. The choice of the REFSET is
at the discretion of The Open Group.
Test sessions are run against each device in your REFSET. The collection of
required test sessions is called "the test campaign". Test results from
the completed test campaign are to be finally submitted in support of certification.
You will be provided with the necessary REFPOOL contact details for you to
arrange testing.
Formal testing now takes place and the system allows you to manage your test sessions
prior to final submission. Help and information are supplied as described in the
Problem Resolution section below. FAIL and UNTESTED results may be resolved to PASS
by the correct reference to Problem Reports which have resulted in agreed Interpretations
of the specification or Test Suite Deficiencies (TSDs). TSDs apply to specific
releases of the specification or test suite.
If FAIL results can be demonstrated to be the fault of the REFSET partner, then they do
not count against the device under test.
Problem Resolution
If you experience problems using the certification tests, please read the "Quick
Start User Guide" available from the home page of every test suite released. If
this does not answer your questions, please check the FAQ page. If you still cannot find an
answer, email vswap-help fully describing the
problem.
If you are using one of the official test suites and getting failures
but are certain that your device conforms to the WAP specifications, please
check the Problem
Report archives. The issue may already be resolved by a WAP
specification Interpretation,
or by an agreed Test Suite Deficiency. If not, please complete
a WAP Problem Report
Form,
accessible from the bottom of every page in the testing area.
Certification
When testing is completed, you can upload the test results to our server using the
VSWAP system. On receipt of your test results, The Open Group performs an
audit. You will be notified of successful certification within four days after final
submission of complete and current test results. If for any reason the submission
was not complete, we notify you so that corrections may be made before resubmitting the
test results. The initial certification fee covers one set of corrective actions.
You will have the option of your product's certification details being published on the
WAP Certified Register or remaining confidential. Additionally, you may choose to instruct
The Open Group in writing to confirm certification to a third party in confidence.
The REFPOOL
The Reference Pool (REFPOOL) comprises devices made available for certification
testing. Submitting a device to the REFPOOL requires completing a separate ICS of the
supported features in a similar way to applying for certification. You will need to
enter into a Non-Disclosure Agreement (NDA) with The Open Group. Please
contact us for further information.
