Austin Group Status Update Austin-11 Page 1 of 1 Submitted by Andrew Josey, The Open Group. November 2nd, 1998 This is a brief status update after last weeks quarterly PASC meeting, held in San Diego, California. The Joint Procedures committee met for the first time on the Thursday morning. There were twelve attendees at the meeting including seven who had attended the inaugural Austin Group meeting. A proposal for an outline set of procedures was floated and looks like achieving concensus amongst the group. Action items were assigned and the group will meet again during the January POSIX week (likely to be the Thursday morning again). It is assumed that the output of the January meeting will be sufficient for the technical group (The Austin Group) to commence its work thereafter. As soon as some written proposals are available from the Joint Procedures Committee I will place a copy in the document register. I presented a status report on progress to date to the Thursday night PASC SEC meeting (The PASC SEC is the steering committee for the POSIX activities). A copy of the slides is available on the web as document Austin/10 in the document register at http://www.opengroup.org/austin/docreg.html The presentation outlined the proposed technical direction and rationale for the outline of the new common specification. We are now waiting on the output of the Joint Procedures Committee, before we can decide the next move. It is anticipated that the status of the group will be determined at the January SEC meeting. Its possible that the lifetime of the study group will be extended in order to submit the PAR if that is the appropriate course of action . Current thoughts for meetings for 1999, are up to 4 meetings with at least half of them to be held in sync with the quarterly PASC meetings. The probable date for the next meeting will be February 1999. I will call the meeting with at least 30 days notice, and anticipate to make that call after the January PASC meeting (Jan 11-15 1999). I am seeking a host for that - I would recommend that we meet in the Bay area. As a point of information the scheduled PASC meetings for 1999 are: Jan 10-15 1999 New Orleans April 11-17 1999 Charlotte NC July 11-16 1999 Nashua (not confirmed) October 23-31 1999 TBD (not confirmed) Andrew Josey The Open Group
