August 21 , 2009 Attendees Andrew Josey, The Open Group Don Cragun, PASC OR Geoff Clare, The Open Group Nick Stoughton, USENIX, ISO/IEC OR Apologies Mark Brown, IBM, TOG OR Ulrich Drepper, Red Hat We picked up the defect report review at Mantis bug #121 On 124 we noted that introducing a change here would likely cause breakage for someone. We recorded further thoughts with the bug. On # 96 We agreed to minute the discussion behind the proposed change. Although posix_openpt() is the preferred way to open a pseudo terminal , many existing applications simply use open(). The grantpt() and unlockpt functions are required to ensure that a consistent portable interface is presented. On implementations where posix_openpt() or open() set the psuedo terminal permissions appropriately, implementations are free to optimize grantpt(). It should also be noted that the rationale for posix_openpt() shows how to implement the interface using open , and requiring grantpt to behave as described.
