Minutes of the 9 April 2015 Teleconference Austin-703 Page 1 of 1 Submitted by Andrew Josey, The Open Group. 10 April 2015 Attendees: David Clissold, IBM Don Cragun, IEEE OR Mark Ziegast, SHware Systems Andrew Josey, The Open Group Geoff Clare, The Open Group Richard Hansen, BBN Joerg Schilling, FOKUS Fraunhofer Eric Blake, Red Hat Martin Rehak, Oracle Roger Faulkner , Oracle, The Open Group OR Nick Stoughton, USENIX, ISO/IEC JTC 1/SC 22 OR Apologies: Mark Brown, Canonical * General news We discussed when we might start reviewing a committee draft. It was proposed we aim for a draft around 21 May. It was noted that after PAR Approval it will take 30 days to form a ballot group , so the earliest a review could occur at IEEE would be in July. Andrew took an action to circulate information on the draft timeline for TC1, so we can consider that as input to the TC2 planning. Andrew announced that Roger would be taking over from Martin as The Open Group OR. Martin plans to continue to attend the meetings. We thanked Martin for his service as OR. * Outstanding actions ( Please note that I have flushed this section to shorten the minutes - to locate the last set of outstanding actions, look to the minutes from 26 Feb 2015) Bug 0000887: printf and other functions appear many times in search results OPEN http://austingroupbugs.net/view.php?id=887 Andrew is investigating. Bug 0000900: add qsort_r OPEN http://austingroupbugs.net/view.php?id=900 The consensus was that its a good idea to add the suggested interface. The usual requirements regarding a sponsor for a new interface apply. Action: Open Group OR , to ask the Base WG if they wish to sponsor the additional qsort interface proposed here. * Current Business Bug 0000901: reserve _POSIX* shell option namespace for future use OPEN http://austingroupbugs.net/view.php?id=901 Geoff had completed his action from the previous week reporting that the already-approved changes to 2.9.1.1 aren't as significant as previously thought. The forward plan for this bug remains as before: Richard: file a new bug report with a concrete feature that would use the _POSIX* namespace (as motivation for reserving set -o _POSIX*) All: debate the proposed feature. If it's something we want, then revisit bug #901. If not, close bug #901. Bug #935: warn users away from naming functions after traditional built-ins Accepted as Marked http://austingroupbugs.net/view.php?id=935 This item is tagged for TC2-2008. An interpretation is required. Interpretation response: The standard states by omission that many utility names are available for use by application writers, and conforming implementations must conform to this. However, concerns have been raised about this which are being referred to the sponsor. Rationale: Almost all, if not all, existing shells have built-in utilities or keywords that are not defined by the standard. Many application writers already know to avoid these names, but the standard needs to clearly specify that these names are not available. Notes to the Editor (not part of this interpretation): On page 2339 between lines 74383 and 74384, insert a new item: b. If the command name matches the name of a utility listed in the following table, the results are unspecified: alloc autoload bind bindkey builtin bye caller cap chdir clone comparguments compcall compctl compdescribe compfiles compgen compgroups complete compquote comptags comptry compvalues declare dirs disable disown dosh echotc echoti help history hist let local login logout map mapfile popd print pushd readarray repeat savehistory source shopt stop suspend times typeset whence and renumber 1.b, c, and d to 1.c, d, and e. On page 3693 after line 126371 insert a new paragraph: Various historical implementations have used the names in item 1.b. as built-ins or reserved words. This standard does not specify their behavior, but their existance means that it is important for portable applications to avoid giving functions (or utilities in PATH) those names because the function (or utility in PATH) might not be executed as expected. Bug #929: Missing "2" in diff -U text about consecutive unaffected lines Accept http://austingroupbugs.net/view.php?id=929 This item is tagged for TC2-2008 Bug #930: Misuse of italic "destination" in ln description OPEN http://austingroupbugs.net/view.php?id=930 Bug #917: specified 'logger' does not match actual usage OPEN http://austingroupbugs.net/view.php?id=917 We will pick up on this bug next time Next Steps ---------- The next call is on April 16, 2015 (a Thursday) Calls are anchored on US time. (8am Pacific) This call will be for the regular 90 minutes. http://austingroupbugs.net An IRC channel will be available for the meeting irc://irc.freenode.net/austingroupbugs An etherpad is usually up for the meeting, with a URL using the date format as below: http://posix@posix.rhansen.org:9001/p/201x-mm-dd password=2115756#
