What are the main differences between the TOGAF Standard, Version 9.1 and the TOGAF Standard, Version 9.2?

The TOGAF Standard, Version 9.2, is an update to the previous version providing improved guidance, correcting errors, improving the document structure, and removing obsolete content. Key enhancements made in this version include updates to the Business Architecture and the Content Metamodel.

The standard has been redesigned and restructured into a smaller publication that includes separate guides. These changes make the TOGAF standard easier to use and maintain, while retaining the major features and structure of the TOGAF 9.1 standard.

The core of the TOGAF framework remains the same in the new version of the standard, with enhancements to Business Architecture, and the Content Metamodel. There is an additional focus on Digital trends and business transformation beyond IT and updated references to the ISO/IEC/IEEE 42010 standard. The new version of the standard is supported by a number of TOGAF Series Guides.

The Business Architecture content is supplemented with titles in the TOGAF Library, including guides on Business Capabilities and Value Streams. Security Architecture is enhanced with a guide in the TOGAF Library providing detailed guidance on how to integrate risk and security into a TOGAF Enterprise Architecture, including a detailed mapping on using the TOGAF framework together with the SABSA framework. Furthermore the TOGAF Library contains industry reference models and practical guidance on how to use the TOGAF standard.

For further details of the TOGAF Standard, Version 9.2 and the differences between Version 9.1 and Version 9.2 download our white paper - An Introduction to the TOGAF Standard, Version 9.2.

Titles in the TOGAF Series Guides include:

  • TOGAF® Series Guide: The TOGAF® Leader’s Guide to Establishing and Evolving an EA Capability
  • TOGAF® Series Guide: A Practitioners’ Approach to Developing Enterprise Architecture Following the TOGAF® ADM

When will there be a major release of the TOGAF Standard?

The Open Group Architecture Forum is continuing to update and develop the TOGAF standard. There were a number of requests and recommendations from Members of The Open Group that need further development and consideration. In addition, feedback from practitioners of the TOGAF standard (from events such as the TOGAF User Group Meetings) has also been incorporated into the new version of the standard.

As this is an evolving process, The Open Group would anticipate a further release of the TOGAF standard within 12 to 24 months after the release of the TOGAF Standard, Version 9.2.

What is the TOGAF Library?

The TOGAF Library is part of The Open Group Library where you can find many standards, guides and white papers published by The Open Group. These publications can be used in conjunction with the TOGAF standard to help address the business challenges faced by today's enterprises.

The TOGAF Library is a reference library containing guidelines, templates, patterns, and other forms of reference material (such as white papers, guides, webinars, case studies etc.) to accelerate the creation of new architectures for the enterprise.
