Enterprise Architecture for Sustainability

One of the UN’s 17 Sustainable Development Goals is aimed specifically at industry and innovation, with the intention to: “Build resilient infrastructure, promote sustainable industrialization, and foster innovation”. The UN’s vision is that such a goal will not only lead to a reduction in the significant carbon footprint of the IT industry, but will also lead to the introduction and promotion of new technologies that will impact sustainability across all industries to contribute toward a much greener future. This section of the event focused upon the critical roles of the Enterprise Architect and technology standards, aligning the strategy of the Portfolio of Digital Open Standards with the goals of both increasing sustainability and reducing emissions, to provide thought-leading guidance for competing in the digital economy.

These EA Sustainability sessions focused upon the wider issues of sustainable IT within the enterprise. Achieving a greener footprint is a critical element of any post-pandemic enterprise strategy. A more sustainable IT infrastructure will improve the Environmental Social and Governance (ESG) standards within an enterprise, as well as raising customer satisfaction and leading to a higher global brand profile for the enterprise.

Introduction to The Open Group FACE™ Consortium

The Open Group FACE™ Consortium is a government, industry, and academia collaboration encouraging innovation in refining business processes and developing vendor-neutral open standards to enable software portability, reusability, and interoperability. This session introduced the FACE Consortium, described the FACE ecosystem, and provided examples of FACE adoption, with opportunities for questions and discussion to better understand the unique needs of organizations from Australia, Canada, New Zealand, and United Kingdom.

Open Industry Standards

In examining some of the transformation issues being faced, this session focused on the development and implementation of the digital open standards to address business, management, operational, and governance issues that are critical to their solution.

Modeling Dynamic Systems Workshop

Dynamic systems are simple in concept and fun to model; for example, to model sustainability you can start with “carbon footprint”, “industrial waste”, and “energy use”. As an architect the technique of dynamic systems is directly applicable to other real problems like enterprise agility, resiliency, and change impact.

TOGAF® User Group

The TOGAF® Standard, a standard of The Open Group, is the open Enterprise Architecture standard used by the world’s leading organizations to improve business efficiency. The TOGAF User Group will focus upon the TOGAF Series Guides that provide the how-to guidance on how to configure and, at times, extend the TOGAF Fundamental Content to suit a given context. There will be input and discussion from some of the key authors behind the TOGAF Series Guides.
