The Open Group launches the ArchiMate® 3.0 Specification to improve systems for modelling the enterprise at a strategic level and drive digital transformation

Improvements to open and independent modelling language enable modellers to cover a wider range of models to suit more specific needs

London, UK – June 14, 2016: The Open Group, the vendor-neutral IT consortium, has today launched the ArchiMate 3.0 Specification, an Open Group standard. Developed by The Open Group ArchiMate Forum, this is the first major update to the ArchiMate language since the ArchiMate 2.1 Specification was published in 2013. New features include elements for modelling the enterprise at a strategic level, such as capability, resource, and outcome, and support to model the physical world of materials and equipment. Furthermore, the usability, consistency and structure of the language have been improved, and definitions have been aligned with other standards such as the TOGAF® framework, BPMN and UML®.

Used by Enterprise Architects to support and improve the architecture process, the ArchiMate modelling language has been designed to drive digital transformation, and set organisations up to succeed in the digital age.

“The ArchiMate® Specification is a visual language for communicating and managing change and complexity through architecture descriptions development,” said Sonia Gonzalez, ArchiMate Forum Director, at The Open Group. “It is well suited to represent strategy in a way that can be easily connected with tactical and operational areas providing an integrated organisational landscape and closing the gap between the strategy and its implementation.”

“The ArchiMate modelling language is the ultimate enabler for Enterprise Architects to deliver enterprise-wide understanding and collaboration on initiatives to modernise and streamline an organisation’s structural and process orientated architecture,” commented Andrew Josey, VP Standards and Certification, The Open Group. “With the ArchiMate 3.0 language, users have even better tools to provide stakeholders with a simplified view of enterprise architecture that represents an integrated organisational landscape.”

Iver Band, Vice Chair of the ArchiMate Forum commented: “With version 3.0 of the ArchiMate Specification, Enterprise Architects are now better equipped to guide complex changes, and tackle the challenges of digital transformation. It introduces explicit support for capability-based planning, and improves linkage between business strategy and all architecture layers. It also enables modelers to describe the Internet of Things and the systems of the physical world, such as manufacturing and logistics, as well as support more compact and intuitive visual models for expressing architectures and build consensus among diverse stakeholders.”

Marc Lankhorst, Managing Consultant & Business Design Evangelist at BiZZdesign said: “Since its inception in 2002, the ArchiMate language has become an indispensable instrument for Enterprise Architects. Its adoption and promotion as a standard by The Open Group has greatly stimulated its use, as witnessed by the thousands of certified architects, the many tools and courses available, and the active and lively online community. I am proud to have been involved in its development since the beginning and the new version of the standard shows how ArchiMate keeps evolving to stay in tune with the needs of its users.”

The ArchiMate 3.0 Specification includes the following features and benefits:

  • Improvements in the motivation layer, which is better suited to represent organisational strategy and context
  • A new strategy layer that considers new concepts such as capability, resource and course of action
  • Facilities to connect the strategic/capability planning with its implementation
  • New concept to support application/information system modelling
  • New concept to support technology platform modelling
  • Improvements in the notation and consistency of the modelling language
  • Better mechanisms to provide stakeholders with more integrated/simplified views representing an integrated organisational landscape

The ArchiMate 3.0 Specification will be available in hardcopy from June 14 from Van Haren Publishing. It will also be available for download and to read online at The Open Group website.

The ArchiMate 3.0 Pocket Guide will be available in hardcopy for the first time through Van Haren Publishing at The Open Group Austin Event, July 18-21, where the new features of ArchiMate 3.0 and practical use cases will be presented.
