EA for Sustainability
One of the UN’s 17 Sustainable Development Goals is aimed specifically at industry and innovation, with the intention to: “Build resilient infrastructure, promote sustainable industrialization, and foster innovation”. The UN’s vision is that such a goal will not only lead to a reduction in the significant carbon footprint of the IT industry, but will also lead to the introduction and promotion of new technologies that will impact sustainability across all industries to contribute toward a much greener future.
Three pivotal themes emerged during a recent event of The Open Group (October 2022), where David Holmes, General Manager – Energy, Dell Technologies, presented research survey results involving Accelerating Sustainability Technology through Industry Standards; a vision of working to innovate together, create solutions, and finally accelerate transition:
- Standards – essential to acceptance
- Capability – increase in computational power
- Resilience – critical to meet customer and regulatory needs
Ron Tolido, EVP, CTO Capgemini Insights & Data Global Business Line, presented the case for Capgemini’s “Do Well, Do Less, Do Good” campaign, which really encapsulates EA for Sustainability (“Frugal IT: The Case for Sustainable Digital Architecture”, October 2022) and references their principle for the cause itself: to boost the organization’s societal purposes by saying “Yes” to technology that boosts sustainability, and “No” to that which is energy-wasting or non-essential, while emphasizing the importance of the total social impact of initiatives in looking for technology that actively benefits society. This virtual conference further develops the focus on Enterprise Architecture and its role in promoting sustainability.
