Summary

In Boston the Architecture Forum hosted an extended Architecture Forum Workshop, from the afternoon of Tuesday 20th July through Thursday 22nd July, in which the members of the Forum progressed a number of key projects, and, in particular, initiated the TOGAF 9 development program.

The structure of the sessions was based around the following themes:

  • The Enterprise, Culture and Stakeholders
  • Architecture Creation
  • Architecture Transformation
  • Architecture Realisation
  • Architecture Management

There were presentations from:

  • Bank of Montreal,
  • Lockheed Martin,
  • Hewlett-Packard,
  • Architecting-the-Enterprise,
  • RealIRM,
  • Metaplexity,
  • Popkin,
  • IBM and
  • OMG

which enabled the delegates to start the inititiation process with strong thought leadership and direction.

There were substantial sessions on the future of the Standards Information Base, the Building Blocks Information Base, and Integration. The Forum gave its support for the initiatives to develop these further under the TOGAF 9 development program.

The outlined plans for TOGAF 9 development were agreed, and the program leadership was given the go-ahead to move to the next stage.

The Architecture Forum also voted to support the initiation of an IT Architect Profession program led by HP and IBM.

Terry Blevins, in his last role as CIO of The Open Group, described the latest two joint initiatives with the OMG and the Integration Consortium. The Architecture Forum unanimously agreed that the initiatives will strengthen TOGAF 9, and that the planned joint workshop with OMG and the Integration Consortium, to be held in November 2004 at the OMG Convention, will provide significant input to TOGAF 9 development.

On Friday 23rd July, after completion of the main Architecture Forum Workshop, there was a a very successful separate project meeting on the alignment of TOGAF and DODAF, with leading experts from both fields seeking to establish the synergy and integration areas between the two frameworks. A small working group was established to meet over the next two months and report back to the Architecture Forum in October on progress and recommendations.

Overall, it was a highly fruitful and successful week.
