Director, Security Forum, The Open Group
Ian joined the open systems membership consortium X/Open in May 1991
as a Senior Technical Editor, based in Reading, England. He continued
in The Open Group following the 1996 merger with the Open Software Foundation.
He moved into management of Open Group member projects, and became Director
of The Open Group's Security Forum in February 2001. In this role he
work closely with information security experts from both the vendor (supply)
and customer (buy) sides of Open Group member organizations, directing,
planning and advocating the Security Forum's meetings and projects to
deliver high-value interoperable security standards and guides. This
involves using business scenario techniques to identify real business
requirements and produce matching solutions. It also involves global
outreach and liaison with other Information Technology standards and
industry consortia.
After graduating in 1966, Ian spent his first 3 working
years as a design engineer on electronic instrumentation, before moving
into technical
writing and support services with STC (communications manuals), then
moving on to Linotype (phototypesetter design & technical training
courses), Logica (manager of engineering services), Norsk Data (project
manager on Sintran and UNIX), and Parceline (computer-tracked distribution & ISO
9000 Quality accreditation), before arriving at X/Open.
