This is Draft 3.0 of The Open Group's SOA ontology.
This draft of the Open Group Ontology for SOA is made public to show the direction that the ontology is taking. It is substantially different from the previous draft (Draft 2.0) that was made available for public comment previously. It is not complete, and there are some points still under discussion (notably the Entity class), but it is sufficiently complete and agreed to give a good idea of what the final deliverable will be. The ontology project has two objectives: to formalize a common understanding of concepts by the business and technical communities, and to contribute to model-driven implementation. The previous public draft, Draft 2.0, focused on the first of these objectives, with the hope that SOA programs could make useful use of the ontology, but with no major effort to ensure that this would be the case. Potential use by SOA programs has however been a major factor in the development of Draft 3.0. This has made it possible to address only a small subset of the concepts that were covered in draft 2.0, and the treatment of those concepts is significantly changed - but the result meets the project objectives in a much more balanced way.
A complete draft will be prepared by the project team and exposed for comment outside The Open Group prior to formal Open Group company review. Interested parties are advised to wait for that version before inputting detailed comments. If you do have any comments at this stage, please send them to Chris Harding. The attached PDF file contains the textual description of the ontology. The attached OWL file contains the ontology itself.
