Friday January 30 - Sunday February 1, 2009
09:00- 17:30 SOA Working Group Preliminary Meeting
This meeting will plan production of deliverables from the three largest SOA Working Group projects: the SOA/TOGAF Practical Guide, the SOA Reference Architecture, and SOA Governance.

The Practical Guide project is developing an Open Group Guide which will explain how to use TOGAF for SOA. Discussion will focus on production of the Guide, and on input to the SOA Japan Working Group, which sees use of TOGAF for SOA as a key work item.

The Reference Architecture project is producing an Open Group Technical Standard SOA reference architecture. The basis of this architecture was agreed in the Chicago meeting in July 2008. Discussion in San Diego will focus on production of the delivered document, the relation of the Reference Architecture to SOA Governance, and preparation for the SOA Summit which will take place later in the conference.

The SOA Governance project has a well-developed draft. Its discussion will focus on resolving comments and issues on the draft, and in planning for publication.

  • SOA Status in Japan and Future Direction.
14:00- 15:30 SOA Working Group Meeting: The SOA Source Book
The Open Group is producing a collection of source material for use by enterprise architects working with Service-Oriented Architecture. It is to be published as The SOA Source Book. The sections are being posted on the web as they appear.

In this meeting, the material in the book will be presented for review and discussion by Working Group members.

16:00- 17:30 SOA Working Group Meeting: An SOA Stocktaking
Three years ago, almost all analysts said that SOA was the future of enterprise architecture. This year, some are saying that it is dead. What is the reality? Are companies using SOA? What have we learned about SOA in the last three years? How will it develop in the future?

This session will be a discussion of these and similar questions by Working Group members.

Wednesday February 4, 2009
09:00- 12:30 Conference Stream: Standard SOA Reference Models and Architectures
There are a number of SOA reference models and architectures being developed by industry bodies and consortia, including The Open Group.

This stream will look at the main SOA reference models and architectures available to the enterprise IT architect. It will include presentations giving the perspectives of The Open Group, OASIS, and the OMG, followed by a panel discussion. (See the conference program.)

13:00- 17:30 SOA Summit
The principal standard reference models and architectures for SOA are being produced by OASIS, the OMG, and The Open Group. The purose of this meeting is to:
  • Compare the standard SOA models and reference architecures being produced by the three bodies; and
  • Consider how they can be harmonized for the benefit of the IT Architecture community.
Thursday February 4, 2009
09:00- 10:30 SOA Working Group Meeting: Standard Reference Models and Architectures for SOA
This session will review and discuss the results of the previous day's conference stream and SOA Summit.
11:00- 15:30 SOA Working Group Meeting: Data and Semantic Technology Architectures for SOA

This is a joint meeting of the SOA and Semantic Interoperability Working Groups.

The previous, highly-successful joint meeting in Glasgow on Information Architecture for SOA established the need to address information in the Business Architecture phase of TOGAF, and suggested how this should be done. This meeting will build on those conclusions to consider the impact on TOGAF's Information Systems Architectures and Technology Architecture phases. It will include discussion of:

  • How the information component of the business architecture relates to the data architecture of the information systems;
  • How semantic technology can support the development of the data architecture;
  • How semantic technology can support the development of the applications architecture (which, in the context of SOA, is a services architecture), and the subsequent implementation of the applications and services;
  • Potential reference models; and
  • The impact on governance.
16:00- 17:30 SOA Working Group Meeting: SOA in the Context of Enterprise Architecture
This session will discuss SOA in the context of the architecture work of The Open Group as a whole. The final 45 minutes (16:45-17:30) will be a joint meeting with the Architecture Forum in which the work of the SOA Working Group will be presented.

This is a draft agenda. Please comment on it to Chris Harding.
