Getting Started with the TOGAF 9 Certification Program

Overview

  • The TOGAF 9 Certification for People Program is a market-driven education and certification program to support TOGAF 9.
  • There are two levels to certification: Level 1, known as TOGAF 9 Foundation, and Level 2, known as TOGAF 9 Certified. Level 2 contains the learning requirements for Level 1.
  • There are a number of different learning paths to obtain certification (see later)

How can I achieve certification?

You first need to decide the level you would like to study for, and then after a period of study, attending a training course or by self-study, take the applicable examinations.

What is the difference between accredited and non-accredited training?

Accredited training course providers are subject to an assessment both of the course and also their personnel and organization. In addition all accredited trainers include in their course fee the examination, either on site as part of the course or a voucher to attend a public Prometric test center.

What are the available certifications?

How do the certifications relate to the Part 1, Part 2 and Bridge exams?

The exams are what you need to pass to reach a certification qualification. There are a number of examinations providing paths to become TOGAF 9 Certified. This is explained further below.

What are my options if I am TOGAF 8 Certified?

An upgrade path, known as the bridging option exists to enable individuals who have qualified as TOGAF 8 Certified to obtain TOGAF 9 certification. Individuals who have qualified as TOGAF 8 Certified can bridge directly to the TOGAF 9 Certified qualification through a single examination.

How can I find out about the syllabus and examinations?

Firstly to obtain a high level view, you should read the datasheets above for the appropriate level or path for certification you are considering. For detailed on the learning outcomes required see the Conformance Requirements document.

Conformance Requirements

There are three examinations as follows:

  • TOGAF 9 Part 1 - Pass mark 55% (22 or more points out of a maximum of 40)

    This exam comprises 40 questions in simple multiple choice format, covering the Level 1 learning outcomes (see the Conformance Requirements for detail). Each correct answer scores a single point.

  • TOGAF 9 Part 2 - Pass mark 60% (24 or more points out of a maximum of 40)

    This exam comprises 8 complex scenario questions, with gradient scoring. This exam is open book and covers the complete Level 2 learning outcomes. The correct answer scores 5 points, the second best answer 3 points, the third best answer 1 point. The distracter scores zero points.

  • TOGAF 8 - 9 Advanced Bridge - Two sections, each with a pass mark 60%, and each has to be passed in order to obtain an overall pass.

    The first section is 20 simple multiple choice questions covering the Level 1 learning outcomes. To obtain a pass for this section requires 12 or more points out of a maximum of 20.

    The second section is identical to the TOGAF 9 Part 2 exam and requires 24 or more points out of a maximum of 40 to pass.

What are the eligibility requirements for the Exams?

The following sections detail the eligibility requirements. Note that ineligible candidates will be disqualified from the exam and no fees refunded.

TOGAF 9 Part 1 exam

There are no prerequisites for the TOGAF 9 Part 1. Any and all candidates are thus eligible to take this examination.

TOGAF 9 Part 2 exam

A candidate must be certified to TOGAF 9 Foundation or have achieved a pass result for the TOGAF 9 Part 1 examination on the same day at the same ATTC provider as they are taking the Part 2 examination.

For candidates not taking the Part 1 exam in the same session, a candidate must have a TOGAF 9 Foundation entry in the Directory of Certified People at http://www.opengroup.org/togaf9/cert/register.html

Candidates are obliged to provide their Personal Conformation Code to the ATTC provider if they have set their directory entry to confidential.

TOGAF 8 - 9 Advanced Bridge exam

A candidate must have been TOGAF 8 Certified in order to be eligible to sit this examination. Candidates should either have a current entry on the TOGAF 8 Certification register at http://www.opengroup.org/togaf/cert/cert_archlist-short.tpl or the candidate should provide a copy of their certificate.

How can I find a training course?

You can find an available accredited training course using the register link on the left or selecting this link . Click on the course name entry and the detailed page should give you a web link to the company that offers the course. As part of the package of attending the qualifying course, the training organization may offer facilities to take the examination, or may supply vouchers for you to take the examination at an authorized examination center.

Are there self-study materials?

Two study guides are available. The first of which covers the TOGAF 9 Foundation. The second is the companion document covering the learning outcomes beyond the Foundation level for TOGAF 9 Certified.

How do I locate a test center?

If you attend an accredited course then the examination may be given as part of the course (check with your course provider), otherwise you can attend a Prometric test center.

How much does certification cost?

Certification is included in the exam fees. Certification exams are priced according to currency values in specific countries and regions and are typically around USD 400 per examination. Certification exam prices are subject to change. In some countries and regions, additional taxes may apply. Contact your test registration center for exact pricing.

The exam is available at any authorized Prometric testing center around the world, at The Open Group China authorized test centers in its territory, and at Accredited TOGAF Training Course Providers. All Accredited TOGAF Training Courses are required to include the examination in the course fee. The examination occurs either on site, or a voucher is provided to take it at a public Prometric test center.

Can I purchase Pre-Paid Exam Vouchers for the TOGAF Exams?

Pre-paid exam vouchers for taking the TOGAF exams at Prometric test centers can only be purchased from Prometric direct. https://www.prometric.com/services/Services/Vouchers.htm. Other organizations selling just Prometric vouchers for the TOGAF 9 examinations are not authorized to do so. (More information...)

The topic areas are weighted so that there are more questions in key areas of the syllabus, for example in the TOGAF 9 Part 1 examination the four topic areas: ADM Phases, ADM guidelines and techniques, Enterprise Continuum and Tools, and Architecture Governance comprise 60% of the questions.

The eleven topic areas covered by the TOGAF 9 Part 1 examination together with the number of questions per area in the examination follows:

The syllabus for the TOGAF 9 Part 2 examination is all the learning outcomes. The exam samples the learning outcomes with eight scenarios and eight questions.

The eight questions are drawn from the following topic areas:

  • ADM Phases: Project Establishment (phases Preliminary, A, Requirements Management)
  • ADM Phases: Architecture Definition (phases B,C,D)
  • ADM Phases: Transition Planning (phases E and F)
  • ADM Phases: Governance (phases G and H)
  • Adapting the ADM
  • Architecture Content Framework
  • TOGAF Reference Models
  • Architecture Capability Framework

The bridging examination -- the TOGAF 8 - 9 Advanced Bridge, is a singler paper using a combination of the two approaches used for TOGAF 9 Part 1 and TOGAF 9 Part 2, except that it only contains 20 multiple choice questions for Part 1.

What allowances are made for non-native English speakers?

Additional time is permitted for individuals for whom English is a second language (ESL). ESL candidates are permitted to bring a dictionary into the exam (subject to Proctor inspection). Contact Prometric when registering for the list of countries where ESL versions of the exams are provided.

Are the Exams available in different languages?

Initially the exams are available in English worldwide. The Open Group China provides Chinese versions of the exams in its territory (more information [pdf]).

Over time where there is market demand we plan to provide translated versions of the exams.

For the Open Book exams, what books are allowed to be taken into the exam?

For the open book exams, the test center provides either a hardcopy or a pdf copy of the applicable text book. Note at Prometric test centers, they operate a clean room examination environment and only the pdf edition is available and is packaged as part of the test -- when running the test selecting the REFERENCE button will pop up a pdf version of TOGAF 9

The applicable text book for the current examinations is the TOGAF 9 specification.

My TOGAF 8 Certification has expired, can I take the TOGAF 8 - 9 Advanced Bridge exam?

Yes, you need to have the prior qualification of TOGAF 8 Certified, irrespective of whether you are currently on the register. See above regarding eligibility for exams for more information.
