RE-CAP- FACE and SOSA Technical Interchange Meeting

2022 FACE and SOSA Consortia TIM & Expo Scores! September 27, 2022

In a flurry of excitement as soon as it opened, the U.S. Air Force/AFLCMC-hosted TIM & Expo kicked off September 27 with a focus on ‘Going Faster with Open Standards’. A special shout-out to the Sponsors, Lockheed Martin and Elma Electronic and The Open Group 2022 event staff who made it all come together seamlessly.

The Services booths were smack dab in the center of the Expo - AFLCMC, Army PEO Aviation, DEVCOM C5ISR Center, and NAVAIR PMA-209 Avionics Architecture group – which were surrounded by more than 50 FACE and/or SOSA member (Industry) companies.  All were effective in demonstrating their latest open standards / open architecture products, strategies and solutions.

More than 500 attendees gathered for the annual, one day TIM and Expo.  Setting the tone at the outset was Lt. General Shaun Morris – Commander of AFLCMC at Wright-Patterson AFB.  He delivered an impressive Keynote that extended to a broad invitation from Industry for feedback to assist the Air Force in delivering a war-winning capability. General Morris spoke about getting to an 80% solution, and allowing recognition there are effective options of acceptance (this is good-enough, don’t always wait until something is perfect); and a strong emphasis on leveraging re-use across Services.  Ms. Jaqueline Janning-Lask, Director of Engineering and Technical Management Services at AFLCMC Wright Patterson followed General Morris’ Keynote.  She pointed out how open standards allow [us] to accelerate innovation. Both speakers spoke to doing integration work, being cost-effective and yet optimizing time, cost and capabilities to move ahead.

Several brilliant TIM paper presentations were given by experts in both the FACE and SOSA arenas.  They include Raytheon’s SOSA EO/IR Mission ThreadScaling Connections with the FACE Transport Services Segment from RTI; Accelerating Technology Readiness Level and Technology Refresh by Curtiss-Wright and several more standouts too many to name here. The TIM papers will be available on The Open Group website for a deeper dive.

And speaking of brilliant, the Expo booths were manned with technical and business development teams who relished consistent engagement with attendees and other Industry members exhibiting. From Abaco to wolfSSL and in-between.  Booth demos done by Boeing, CAES, Collins Aerospace, Curtiss-Wright, Green Hills Software, L3 Harris, Mercury, Wind River and many more, were engaged on multiple OA/OS/MOSA efforts. All exhibiting appear to be well-positioned on the dynamic approach spoken in 2020 by Secretary of Defense James Mattis and Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, General Joseph Dunford -- to operate at the speed of relevance.

New on the Agenda this year gave attendees several added breakout sessions as well. In addition to a FACE Overview and SOSA Overview, other presentations included a SOSA 101, Architecture & Requirements Model, Intro to Data Architecture, MORA 101, MORA 102, and MORA 013.

Deepest gratitude for this successful technical interchange goes to Dr. Ilya Lipkin, AFLCMC, Lockheed-Martin and Elma Electronic, FACE Consortium members, SOSA Consortium members, and the numerous featured companies and organizations that spent tireless effort to bring their best OA/OS advancements and teams to the Dayton Convention Center.  A final note to The Open Group team that kept it running smoothly, before and during!  Herding cats, shall we say is often a herculean task.  Well done, all!

Watch for news on where to view the 2022 TIM presentations.  And circle September 2023 on your calendar. Expect news shortly regarding The Open Group - NAVAIR-coordinated FACE and SOSA Consortia TIM & Expo next year!   Happy Holidays …
