Tri-Service Open Architecture Interoperability Demonstration (TSOA-ID 2022) Expo Showcases Multiple FACE™ Consortium Members Open Standards/OA/MOSA Products
Walking-on-air seemed to best describe the level of excitement circulating through TSOA-ID held near the Naval Air Station in Patuxent River, MD on March 15th. Starting the day prior to the public TIM and Expo, one could fully sense the enthusiasm of the more than 40 exhibiting company teams and organizations happy to be meeting in-person once again, 21 of which were FACE Consortium member companies. Each vendor provided exclusive live product demonstrations to showcase their latest advancements in open architecture. TSOA-ID was a unique, industry-sponsored event, flawlessly executed thanks to the generosity of Mercury Systems, Premier Sponsor; Curtiss-Wright Defense Solutions, Distinguished Host; and Precise Systems, Special Patron.
The “Open Standards – Bringing It All Together” theme was apparent throughout the entire gathering that began when Brigadier General Rob Barrie, U.S. Army Program Executive Officer, Aviation, took the stage. His opening keynote featured a presentation focused on “Designing, Developing, Delivering and Supporting Advanced Aviation Capabilities”. His message to the nearly 460 attendees focused on why there is an urgent need for MOSA right now. He highlighted that we are at a unique inflection point during which we need to accelerate program execution at the speed of technology, in order to produce rapid capabilities that match the pace of threat evolution. He further illustrated that MOSA provides opportunities available now that can be leveraged across future and enduring acquisitions.
Major General Robert Collins, Program Executive Officer for Command, Control, Communications-Tactical (PEO C3T), followed up with an interactive panel discussion comprised of his team of MOSA experts, including his Chief Engineer, Chief Acquisition Officer, and Chief Technical Architect, who are currently focused on Implementing C5ISR/EW Modular Open Suite of Standards (CMOSS) Open Standards across PEO C3T.
By the afternoon, Office of the Undersecretary of Defense (OUSD) leadership took the stage to deliver additional insightful presentations highlighting the importance of MOSA efforts from senior Pentagon officials’ perspectives. Mr. Dave Tremper, Director, Electromagnetic Warfare, discussed “Open Architecture Impacts on Electromagnetic Spectrum Operations,” while Ms. Stephanie Possehl, Acting Deputy Director, Engineering, presented “MOSA Strategic Considerations.” Finally, special guest speaker Chris Behre, Directed Energy Weapons (DEWS) System Technical Specialist, delivered an eye-opening view of the DEWS MOSA Reference Architecture.
With the many influential speakers at TSOA-ID, the coup de grâs was the afternoon MOSA Tech Experts Panel, moderated by John McHale, Executive VP OpenSystems. The dream panel of distinguished panelists included: Joe Carter, Acting Systems Engineering Branch Chief in APEO for Engineering; Dr. Bill Conley, Sr. Vice President and Chief Technology Officer, Mercury Systems; Scott Dennis, Chief Technical Architect, PEO AVN MOSA Transformation Office; Jason Dirner, MOSA Chief Engineer, C5ISR Center Engineering & Systems Integration Directorate; Nadine Geier, Director of Systems Engineering, OUSD (R&E); Dr. Ilya Lipkin, Technical expert for AFLCMC Sensors and Engineering Directorate.
