The Open Group Work Groups are vendor-neutral environments where members share knowledge and resources, and collaborate on developing open technology standards and certifications. Formed at the request of at least two member organizations, most Work Groups are open to all members in addition to The Open Group Forum entitlements, and there is no limit to the number of Work Groups members may join.

Exclusive Governing Board Work Groups for Platinum Members
As industry leaders, Platinum Members of The Open Group incubate key standards and certification initiatives. At an appropriate time these Work Groups may be opened up to other members. They currently include:
- The Governing Board Open Professions Work Group develops the certification standards for The Open Group Professional Certification Program and has sub-groups covering the Architect, Data Scientist, and Technical Specialist professions.
- The Governing Board UNIX® Work Group manages the strategy for the UNIX standard
- The Governing Board Business Architecture Work Group is developing the Open Business Architecture standard (O-BA)
