The TOGAF Certification Portfolio
Q: What is the value of obtaining a TOGAF certification?
A: The learning paths within The Open Group TOGAF certification portfolio are designed to address specific skillsets and competencies drawn from the standard. Holding a TOGAF certification from The Open Group increases job and salary prospects for individuals and provides confidence to employers and prospective employers that the individual has the demonstrable level of knowledge required.
Q: Do you have any advice or tips for aspiring enterprise architects embarking on the TOGAF certification journey?
A: A tip for aspiring architects is to consider your personal situation (such as career opportunities, and amount of time you can dedicate for learning and personal development) then to review all the options in the portfolio. Considerations include whether to undertake small chunks of learning, for a specific competency and skillset such as Agile Specialist, or whether to take on the larger certifications such as TOGAF EA Practitioner, which can be taken in a stepwise matter
Q: What does the TOGAF Certification Portfolio include?
A: The TOGAF certification portfolio encompasses learning paths and certifications for Bodies of Knowledge based on both the TOGAF Standard, Version 9.2 and the TOGAF Standard, 10th Edition. This includes TOGAF 9 certifications, TOGAF Enterprise Architecture certification, TOGAF Business Architecture certification, and TOGAF certification credentials. The paths include different amounts of learning, ranging from short certification credentials (3 hours study or more) to multi-day certifications. New learning paths introduced to support the TOGAF Standard, 10th Edition include direct paths from TOGAF 9 Foundation and upwards, and recognition of TOGAF 9 certification with the bridge path.
The contents of the portfolio include
TOGAF Certifications
- TOGAF 9 Foundation
- TOGAF 9 Certified
- TOGAF Enterprise Architecture Foundation
- TOGAF Enterprise Architecture Practitioner
- TOGAF Business Architecture Foundation
TOGAF Certification Credentials
- Integrating Risk and Security in a TOGAF Enterprise Architecture
- TOGAF Framework: Digital Specialist
- TOGAF Framework: Agile Specialist
- TOGAF EA Leader
- TOGAF Business Architecture Level 1
Q: Why is there no TOGAF 10 Foundation or TOGAF 10 Practitioner?
A: An explicit decision has been made to decouple the naming of the certification from the standard. The certifications are based on the Bodies of Knowledge defined in the conformance requirements documents. This will allow the standard to evolve independently of the certification.
Q: What is a Body of Knowledge?
A: A body of knowledge (BOK or BoK) is the complete set of concepts, terms and activities that make up a professional domain.
For TOGAF Certification a BoK is a subset of the standard relevant to the certification, defined as learning units and documented in the Conformance Requirements documentation.
There are separate Bodies of Knowledge defined for the different certifications and certification credentials. They address specific skillsets and competencies.
Q: Where is the Body of Knowledge defined for TOGAF Enterprise Architecture Practitioner?
A: The BoK for TOGAF Enterprise Architecture Certification based on the TOGAF Standard, 10th Edition is defined in the following documents:
- X2202 TOGAF® Certification Program Conformance Requirements (Multi-Level), Version 4.0
- X2203 TOGAF® Enterprise Architecture Practitioner Bridge Conformance Requirements , Version 1.0
Q: How are the different TOGAF certifications within the portfolio positioned with respect to Bloom's taxonomy.
A: Certification credentials are at Level 1 and 2 (Remembering and Understanding).
Foundation level certifications are also at Level 1 and 2. Practitioner level certifications in addition to Level 1 and 2 include Levels 3 and 4 (application and analysis).
The TOGAF Enterprise Architecture Practitioner certification includes a mandatory set of Learning Studies specifically to address Bloom's taxonomy level 3 and 4.
TOGAF Enterprise Architecture Practitioner
Q: What is TOGAF Enterprise Architecture Practitioner certification?
A: This addition to the TOGAF Certification portfolio is aimed specifically at the Practitioner, the person who is tasked to develop, maintain, and use Enterprise Architecture. It focuses on the competencies for developing, maintaining, and using Enterprise Architecture following the TOGAF ADM.
Q: Who is TOGAF Enterprise Architecture Practitioner certification applicable to?
- Individuals expected to apply the TOGAF approach to develop, sustain, and transform domain architectures
- Individuals actively contributing to organizational transformation
- Individuals working in Agile environments who need to understand and apply Enterprise Architecture using the TOGAF Standard
- Individuals who wish to continue their professional development
Q: Since the TOGAF Standard, 10th Edition has a lot more content than the TOGAF Standard, Version 9.2 does that mean that there is more learning content for TOGAF Enterprise Architecture Practitioner certification compared to TOGAF 9 certification?
A: No, the learning content is based on a defined Body of Knowledge and a set of conformance requirements. The amount of learning content has been carefully selected to meet the goals of the certification.
TOGAF Enterprise Architecture Practitioner Level 1 consists of 8 learning units and 63 learning outcomes, compared to TOGAF 9 Level 1 which is 13 learning units and 107 learning outcomes. TOGAF Enterprise Architecture Practitioner Level 2 consists of 8 learning units and 68 learning outcomes, compared to TOGAF 9 Level 2 which is 26 learning units and 108 learning outcomes
Q: What languages will exams be available in?
A: Initially the exams will be available in English and French, also English with an ESL (English as a Second Language) time allowance available for eligible candidates. Translations will follow, initially Simplified Chinese targeted for early 2023. Other translations may follow later.
Q: What accredited training courses are available?
A: The Accredited Training Courses are listed on the Accredited Training Course Register
https://certification.opengroup.org/register/togaf-certification-portfolio-atc-register
Q: Where can I find an accredited training course near me (or online) for the TOGAF Standard, 10th Edition?
A: Courses offered by accredited training course providers covering the TOGAF Standard, 10th Edition are shown on the accredited training calendar (TOGAF Enterprise Architecture*, TOGAF Business Architecture Foundation), see
https://training.opengroup.org/calendar/
Open Badges
Q: What Open Badges are available?
A: The TOGAF Enterprise Architecture Foundation badge is issued for individuals becoming certified at the foundation level.
The TOGAF Enterprise Architecture Practitioner badge is issued for individuals becoming certified at the practitioner level. In addition for individuals attending accredited courses who satisfactorily complete the TOGAF Enterprise Architecture Practitioner Learning Studies (a set of minimum 10 practical exercises) the Applied TOGAF® Enterprise Architecture Practitioner badge is issued.
Q: How can I receive my Applied TOGAF® Enterprise Architecture Practitioner badge?
A: You need to attend an Accredited Training Course and satisfactorily complete the TOGAF Enterprise Architecture Practitioner Learning Studies (a minimum set of 10 practical exercises). Your Accredited Training Provider is required to submit candidate IDs of individuals who complete the learning studies to The Open Group. This will require for you to register with The Open Group and provide your candidate ID to your accredited trainer, so they can submit confirmation of completion to The Open Group. Your candidate ID will then be used to issue the badge after you have successfully passed the applicable exam (Bridge or Level 2).
TOGAF 9 Certification
Q: Will my TOGAF 9 certification expire?
A: No – Certifications for TOGAF 9 Foundation, and TOGAF 9 Certified do not expire.
Q: Will TOGAF 9 training and certification continue?
A: Yes – The Open Group will continue to support the TOGAF 9 certification learning paths within the TOGAF certification portfolio indefinitely.
Q: What is the impact of the TOGAF Standard, 10th Edition on my TOGAF 9 certification?
A:The TOGAF certification portfolio has been updated to include new learning paths based on bodies of knowledge defined from the TOGAF Standard, 10th Edition. Supported learning paths include new opportunities for continued professional development and recognition of TOGAF 9 certification as a prerequisite.
Q: How has the TOGAF certification evolved?
A: A key difference with the new certification elements added to the certification portfolio is they focus on a specific body of knowledge and skillset, whereas TOGAF 9 certification had a broader scope. This change sees the introduction of the TOGAF series guides, providing much requested ‘how-to’ content to support practical application TOGAF principles. This means that the number of learning units has decreased in order to emphasise practical exercises which have been built into the syllabus.
Q: Has my TOGAF 9 certification lost its value?
A: No – TOGAF 9 certification is widely required in the job marketplace as evidenced by recent job surveys, and is expected to continue to be so. The knowledge acquired by obtaining TOGAF 9 certification is carried forward — the universal concepts and the ADM from the TOGAF Standard, Version 9.2 have evolved to become the TOGAF Fundamental Content within the TOGAF Standard, 10th Edition. Existing TOGAF 9 certifications are also recognized as prerequisites for the new learning paths being introduced to support the TOGAF Standard, 10th Edition.
Q: Can I add to my TOGAF Certification?
A: Yes, there are multiple learning paths introduced that build upon existing TOGAF certifications. This includes paths for EA Practitioners, Business Architects, Digital Specialists, Agile Specialists, and EA Leaders.
Q: Do I have to be TOGAF 9.2 Certified in order to take any of the certifications released inclusive of the TOGAF Standard, 10th Edition?
A: The only new certification which requires pre-existing TOGAF certification is the TOGAF Enterprise Architecture Bridge Exam. Should you have no pre-existing certification, you can start from the foundation level of either the TOGAF Enterprise Architecture learning path or the TOGAF Business Architecture learning path.
Q: Should I become TOGAF Enterprise Architecture Practitioner certified?
A: See the description above for details of the applicability of this learning path.
Q: I am TOGAF 9 Certified, how can I become TOGAF Enterprise Architecture Practitioner certified?
A: Individuals who hold the TOGAF 9 Certified qualification are able to add TOGAF Enterprise Architecture Practitioner certification via a bridging path recognizing their existing knowledge. This bridging path focuses on the new and expanded features of the TOGAF Standard, 10th Edition.
Q: How long will the bridging path be available for those with the TOGAF 9 Certified Qualification?
A: At the time of writing there is no set date for withdrawal. We will give 18 months’ notice of the withdrawal of the bridging path.
Q: How much does it cost to become TOGAF Enterprise Architecture Practitioner certified?
A: Exam fees are here.
Q: I have TOGAF 9 Foundation certification, what are my options for taking the new certifications based on the TOGAF Standard, 10th Edition?
A: The options are as follows. Firstly, you could take a certification credential:
- Integrating Risk and Security in a TOGAF Enterprise Architecture
- TOGAF Framework: Digital Specialist
- TOGAF Framework: Agile Specialist

Q: I am TOGAF 9 Certified, how can I become TOGAF Enterprise Architecture Practitioner certified?
A: Individuals who hold the TOGAF 9 Certified qualification are able to add TOGAF Enterprise Architecture Practitioner certification via a bridging path recognizing their existing knowledge. This bridging path focuses on the new and expanded features of the TOGAF Standard, 10th Edition.
Q: TOGAF Business Architecture vs TOGAF Enterprise Architecture certification — which should I choose?
A. This depends on your role. If you have a focus on the business and need to know how to use the business architecture methods from the TOGAF Standard, 10th Edition, then TOGAF Business Architecture Foundation is a highly relevant starting point to your professional development.
If you want to work towards being a practitioner applying the TOGAF Architecture Development Method to develop and sustain Enterprise Architectures then the TOGAF Enterprise Architecture learning path is applicable.
